FEATURE Sedums typically come to thrive. Wind uplift has also deterred building owners in the state. Despite these hurdles, Florida has experienced an increase in interest, and municipal and private industry now boasts many green roofs. Incentive programs within the commercial building community have helped to ease installation costs and drive demand. With Florida being the “sunshine” state, there is also strong interest in integrating green roofs with solar. As such, in this article are two examples of green roofs in Florida that have successfully integrated green roofing sytems with photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal technology. PROJECT #1: HEADQUARTER HONDA For the owners of “Headquarter Honda,” a dealership facility in Clermont, Florida, building a landmark LEED® Platinum project meant incorporating nearly every type of environmental roof-top solution including reflective membrane, day-lighting, PV, solar thermal, and a vegetative roof system. Completed in January 2010, the building has a 126 kw PV panel system and a 6,000-square-foot extensive, irrigated green roof. As is common in construction, there were several hurdles the design and construction team had to solve. While installations using PV and vegetative roofing in a totally integrated system can create a cooler environment in which solar panels can function, because PV is so susceptible to shading, the original layout needed to be reworked several times to accommodate ductwork and other existing impediments. The PV array turned into multiple arrays since the as-built conditions on the roof meant the 7000-plus square foot PV array had to be broken up over four separate areas. Every proposed configuration had to be approved by the engineers. As the system is self-ballasted and required a minimum configuration of eight modules, the final layout required over a dozen revisions to meet the wind-loading requirements. Afterwards, small tweaks were made in the field to get the most efficient exposure to the sun. “Be prepared to work collaboratively with your design team, and be ready to modify your plans,” said Lindy Ryan, president, Tecta America Central Florida. “The Honda project used over 30 tradespeople from four different trades to complete the contracted scopes of work. We used our trusted MEP and structural engineers as well as horticultural and stormwater design professionals.” The 40,000-square-foot, two-ply torch applied modified bitumen roof system by Soprema featured their LEED® compliant, highly reflective Soprastar cap sheet. The membrane surface performs with an initial Solar Reflective Index (SRI) of 96. (LEED requires SRI of 76 or better and 96 is average for reflective cap sheets.) This membrane was installed over Concrecel’s lightweight insulated concrete (LWIC). LWIC was chosen for its long lifecycle and ability to be reused when the existing 20-year roof system needs to be replaced. All metal flashings and trim were fabricated from high-recycled content aluminum and attached to Forest Steward Council (FSC)-certified lumber. Wind and weight loads are important contributing factors which can pose an enormous challenge in considerations of what sizes of PV arrays can work.
