® RESEARCH The Nation’s #1 Certified Green Roof Media* IMPACT OF COMBINED SYSTEM ON THE URBAN THERMAL ENVIRONMENT The rooftop energy balance plays an important role in the development of the urban heat island. Traditional membrane and rock-ballast roofs absorb much of the incident solar radiation, and can reach temperatures of up to 140°F or 150°F on a hot summer day. As air flows over these hot roofs much of the heat is convected into the urban atmosphere. When a PV panel is placed on a rooftop it further exacerbates the urban heat island. This is due to the fact that PV panels typically absorb a large amount of solar radiation, but only convert a modest fraction (perhaps 10 to 20 percent) of that energy into electricity. The result is that the PV roof has three hot surfaces (top and bottom of the PV panel, and the rooftop itself) that each convect heat into the urban environment. While the PV-shaded rooftop surface is certainly cooler than it would be if not shaded, the net effect of putting PV on rooftops may significantly increase the contribution of the roof to the urban heat island. By installing a green roof under the PV all surface temperatures can be reduced and the adverse impacts on the heat island can be reduced. To evaluate the role of the rooftop in contributing to the urban heat island we will measure surface temperatures and estimate convective heat flux from all surfaces for multiple roofing design options (e.g., traditional membranes, green roofs, PV roofs, and combination roofs). PROJECT STATUS & NEXT STEPS The green roof pans, growing media, plants, PV panels, and most instrumentation were installed on the roof facility in spring of 2010. Routine data gathering will begin in summer 2010. The facility is designed to simultaneously conduct two replicates of two experimental conditions. Each pan also has an non-shaded control area and an area shaded by panels. While most experiments will require one or more full growing seasons to gather sufficient data to answer research questions, some short-term episodic experiments will also be conducted. Experimental variables to be explored over the course of this project include plant diversity, irrigation schedules, PV panel placement (height from plants and spacing between panels), and growing media type and depth. Project status and summary data will be presented on the project website (http://solar.pdx.edu) and detailed analyses will be presented in the peer-reviewed literature and at conferences. David J.
