ON THE ROOF WITH… EDEN BRUKMAN VICE PRESIDENT, INTERNATIONAL LIVING BUILDING INSTITUTE AND RESEARCH DIRECTOR FOR THE CASCADIA REGION GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL Interview by Caroline M. Nolan T he headline on the Nov. 10, 2009 news, released by the new International Living Building Institute (ILBI) in conjunction with Cascadia Region Green Building Council (Cascadia) from the beating heart of last year’s GreenBuild show in Phoenix said it all: “Radical Green Building Takes a Giant Leap Forward as The International Living Building Institute’s New Standard Addresses Social Justice, Urban Agriculture and Community Scale Impacts.” The original version of the Living Building Challenge was first launched at GreenBuild in 2006 by Jason F. McLennan, CEO of Cascadia. He set out to codify a standard for what he called “living buildings” – the most advanced, sustainable and revolutionary design standard in the world starting in the mid-1990s, and many believe it has been achieved with Version 2.0. LIVING ARCHITECTURE MONITOR The so-called “radical” Living Building Challenge™ Version 2.0, takes the original concept much further with an expanded focus on local food production, unrestricted access to nature, no more gated communities and other social equity issues. The latest iteration of the Living Building Challenge goes beyond traditional green building certification programs – which tend to focus on individual buildings, taking a more wholistic approach which includes everything from smaller, in-home remodels straight through to community or campus-wide initiatives and infrastructure projects including bridges, roads and parks. The new version is also more inclusive and said, by its creators, to serve as “a unifying tool, bringing together many disciplines and players for the first time under one green building standard – architects and developers with urban planners and landscape archi- tects, environmentalists and social activists, as well as affordable housing advocates and preservationists – to form a visionary pathway to a restorative future.” The Canada Green Building Council also announced a formal partnership with the Living Building Challenge 2.0 in November, noting that they will act on behalf of the organization in Canada. Since launching the latest version, organizers say they have had conversations with representatives from more than a dozen countries including Australia, Ireland, U.K., New Zealand, India, Colombia and Guatemela, people who are enthusiastic about the program and want to know how they can help support it in some way – everything from creating a living building project to more formal inquiries about getting the program up and running in their own region. This growing international interest was one of WINTER 2010
