PROJECT PROFILE gETTINg TO THE ROOT OF sUsTAINABLE LIVINg HALIfAX SEApORT fARMER’S MARKET by: MELISSA KOIS L ocated on the quiet Atlantic shores of Halifax, Nova Scotia – Canada’s eastern tip of tranquility and charm – is a sustainable beacon of light. The Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market is a 55,000 square foot, twelve million dollar transformation from a former seaport terminal into a LEED® Platinum ecological showcase. The building houses a year-round market that Halifax residents can depend on for locally grown produce including organics, among other seasonal treats. Using 75% less power and water than required by the National Model Energy Code, the Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market was designed to reconnect the community with its waterfront origins and to showcase Halifax as a progressive, sustainable city with a vibrant environment, economy and culture. As one of few LEED® Platinum buildings located in Halifax, the community has come to embrace the building as an example of their collective clean energy aspirations, utilizing the various spaces of the premises as both a market and communal gathering space. Offering a home not only to the farmer’s market, this impressive example of integrative design and innovation provides space for various community activities including yoga classes, an observation deck, dance studio, charitable race course and facility rentals, birthday parties, weddings and concerts. With an extensive list of year-round vendors claiming stake inside the market walls, it is easy to see how in just over a year the Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market has positively affected community members. Paying homage to its location, the market is within walking distance to the historical downtown core of Halifax, making it accessible to visitors and inhabitants alike. As a sustainable fortress of LEED® Platinum design, the Lydon Lynch project boasts an incredible list of green features such as rooftop turbines, geothermal heating and cooling, solar hot water, natural day lighting, water conservation, passive ventilation, sustainably harvested wood, and non-toxic regionally sourced recycled and salvaged materials.
