OSPE - The Voice - Spring 2014 - (Page 2)

VIEWPOINT MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT AND CHAIR I am very pleased to be writing to you once again from the Chair's seat at OSPE. As our immediate Past Chair Paul Acchione, P.Eng., takes on the role of Acting CEO, the OSPE Board is hard at work on the search for a new chief executive. We thank past CEO Mark Dietrich for his contributions to OSPE and look forward to having a new leader in place this summer. As a membership organization, OSPE's success depends on how well we meet your needs. Every year we look to you tell us how we can serve you better. In our most recent Member Satisfaction Survey, you gave us passing grades on several fronts. We also see that we have work to do to build even greater confidence. Over the years, we have also asked you to tell us what you want most from OSPE. It is no surprise that advocacy, once again, tops the list as your highest priority. This edition of The Voice highlights OSPE's achievements in this area. Our feature article shows that our long-term commitment to relationship building has paid off in terms of increased profile and influence for Ontario's engineers. Governments are now looking to OSPE routinely as a trusted source for advice on technical subjects and also for policy input. In recent months, we have engaged with all levels of government on critical issues like energy, transit, infrastructure development and employment. We undertook groundbreaking research on engineering labour market issues and developed new tools to help bridge employment gaps. Our Political Action Network (PAN) volunteers kept engineering issues top of mind among elected officials from all parties, all across the province. On the member services front, we have added new affinity programs and retooled our Professional Development offerings. We revamped our Student Membership, making it easier than ever for engineering students to enjoy the benefits of OSPE membership at no cost. We are introducing new programs to engage industry. We are working closely with PEO Chapters to offer more events and programming in local communities. As an OSPE member, your investment in membership allows you to enjoy great benefits for yourself. But it does more than that. Your support helps us deliver more services and greater respect for all engineers, all across the province. We thank you for your continued commitment. Daniel J. Young, M.Eng., P.Eng. President and Chair 2 TheVoice Spring 2014
