PROFILE OSPE HONOURS BOB GOODINGS, P.ENG., WITH PRESIDENT'S AWARD ONTARIO STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM CSPE TRUST At its Annual General Meeting in May, OSPE was delighted to confer its first President's Award, Professional Engineer category, upon Robert A. (Bob) Goodings, P.Eng. The new award is the latest commendation Bob has earned for his remarkable professional success and exemplary commitment to serving the engineering community. As a highly respected water engineer, Bob played a key role in the planning of many of today's major water and wastewater systems in Ontario and abroad. Bob served for 45 years as a professional engineer and later as Chair of Gore & Storrie in Toronto, which became part of CH2M Hill. In 1994, Bob was made a Lieutenant Governor-in-Council Appointee on PEO Council. As Chair of PEO's Joint Advocacy Implementation Committee, he was instrumental in the creation of OSPE in 2000 and served as President and Chair of OSPE's first elected Board. Under his leadership, OSPE's Safe Water Task Force influenced changes to the Safe Drinking Water Act and Sustainable Water and Sewage System Act, which now require meaningful involvement of professional engineers. He was later elected President of PEO Council. A second President's Award in the Young Professional category was bestowed upon Faizul Mohee, an engineering graduate student at the University of Waterloo. The Young Professionals category recognizes an exceptional OSPE volunteer who has served as an advocate for the engineering community through various roles during academic studies and following graduation. Introduced for the first time this year, the President's Award is a unique opportunity to recognize OSPE volunteers who have gone above and beyond in effecting positive change for the engineering profession in Ontario. Award winners are nominated by OSPE's new Membership and Volunteer Recognition Committee (MAVRC) and approved by the Board of Directors. Congratulations to Bob and Faizul! When OSPE was formed in 2000, the Canadian Society of Professional Engineering (CSPE) set up the CSPE Trust to reward engineering students and Engineering Societies (EngSocs) for promoting the benefits of student membership in professional societies such as OSPE. Since then, the Trust has given annual student awards of $3,000-$4,000. This year, awards were handed out at the OSPE AGM to OSPE Student Ambassadors Laurence Coulson from Carleton University and Michael Taguiam from the University of Toronto. A CSPE Travel Bursary was also awarded to the Engineering Student Societies Council of Ontario (ESSCO) to help EngSoc representatives attend OSPE and other profession-related meetings across the province.
