UP FRONT
CELEBRATING THE PROFESSION
NATIONAL ENGINEERING
MONTH IN ONTARIO
What do engineers do? They
build bridges, don't they?
All too often that is where
the public imagination ends.
OSPE is committed to showing the public that engineers
do so much more. Each year,
National Engineering Month
(NEM) Ontario provides
the platform to show our
fellow citizens that engineers
improve lives and enable
change in exciting, ground
breaking ways every day.
8 TheVoice Spring 2014
Established by Engineers Canada in 1992, National Engineering Month (NEM)
is a Canada-wide celebration designed to energize engineering professionals,
educate the public and inspire the next generation to see that engineering and
engineering technology are about more than building bridges - they can help
change the world.
Throughout March 2014, NEM Ontario featured a wide array of volunteer-led
events and activities, many of which were free of charge, highlighting the wonders
of engineering and engineering technology in virtually every discipline and sector.
From professional lectures to fun hands-on youth activities; from classroom visits
to awareness-building public outreach, NEM Ontario activities shone a spotlight
on engineering as an essential part of building communities and leading change.
OSPE was proud to play a key role in presenting NEM Ontario 2014,
including our second annual Engineering Night with the Toronto Raptors at
Air Canada Centre. Throughout March, OSPE was on the road, hosting events
at the Canada Science and Technology Museum in Ottawa, Science North in
Sudbury and the famed CN Tower in downtown Toronto.
For the fourth consecutive year, OSPE also partnered with the Engineering
Student Societies Council of Ontario (ESSCO) to host a spectacular Purple
Power event at the CN Tower. An incredible, collaborative Rube Goldberg
Machine, built by engineering school teams across Ontario, spanned the province,
connected via the Internet. The machine's final action flipped a switch to light
the Tower purple - a colour traditionally associated with the stamp of a
professional engineer.
At OSPE, celebrating and showcasing engineers and the engineering profession is a top priority. We are committed to showing Ontarians that engineers are
daring thinkers who address the critical challenges facing our world.
Many thanks to our sponsors and volunteers for making
NEM Ontario 2014 an outstanding success. NEM Ontario
is a continued collaboration between Engineers Without
Borders (EWB), the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists
(OACETT) and Professional Engineers Ontario
(PEO). To learn more about NEM Ontario and
this year's events, visit nemontario.ca.
