Toronto chapter of EngiQueers Canada, a national student organization that aims to connect LGBTQ+ groups and their
allies across the country to promote idea-sharing and increase collaboration. Including UofT, EngiQueers spans 9 provinces
with 31 chapters in total. Katharine is also a sitting officer of the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students and works as
an Engineering Change Lab Commissioner. However, the world of engineering wasn't always what Katharine dreamed of.
In high school, Katharine wanted to be a geologist. Although the mines weren't totally appealing, Katharine's family, many of
whom are engineers themselves, suggested she try the Learning Enrichment Advancement Program (LEAP) offered at McMaster
University during the summer. The program delivers courses
aimed at research and innovation, held at McMaster's state-ofthe-art engineering laboratories. Katharine was exposed to a

variety of mentors including some prominent women figures
during the program. The collaborative nature of the program
allowed her to use her mathematical and social skills to solve
the presented problems.
In addition to LEAP, Armstrong attended Girls Leadership
in Engineering Experience (GLEE), a two-day event that
includes career panels with UofT Engineering Alumni, a
keynote address by a leading female engineer and dinner

by successful women who shared their experiences in the
professional world.
All of this exposure helped mold Katharine's decision into
pursuing engineering as a career. The guidance provided to
her through events and summer programs showed her the
