ADVOCACY IN ACTION
ADVANCED MANUFACTURING
- using innovative technology to improve the
quality of products or efficiency of processes

As there is a need to integrate technological advances into
manufacturing, engineers are always at the frontier of
developing efficient strategies to produce more high-quality
products.
The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario
have jointly established an "advanced manufacturing
supercluster", which invites companies and research
institutions as collaborators to develop the next-generation
manufacturing capabilities for Canada. This supercluster
incorporates technologies such as advanced robotics,
automation, and additive manufacturing into more efficient
production lines that allows R&D outputs to be readily
converted into commercialized products. By focusing on
highly qualified personnel training and advanced technology
adoption, this government initiative seeks to blend innovation
and high value add with Canadian products. The advanced

manufacturing (AM) supercluster focuses on the following:
* Internet of things (IoT)
* Machine learning & artificial intelligence (AI)
* Cybersecurity
* Additive manufacturing (3D printing)
Retrospectively, innovation from scientific breakthroughs and
fundamental research typically takes 8-10 years to be fully
commercialized. With AM technologies rapidly changing
how prototyping and manufacturing are being carried out,
the timeframe of commercialization from laboratories can be
vastly reduced, which can bring designs and products closer
to the end users.
Herein, two key examples of applying AM technologies in
practical manufacturing settings to produce high value products
with increased efficiency and customizability are discussed:
