SPEAKERS

THE VOICE Fall 2020

he 2021 Engineering Conference call for speakers invites thoughtprovoking presenters to engage stakeholders from across the
engineering profession and inspire positive change.
The event will bring together members of government, industry
and academia for a two-day event that tackles the issues faced by the
engineering profession. The conference will focus on four specific stream topics titled:
"Sustainability", "Innovation", "Engineering Workforce", and "Skills for Tomorrow." We
invite all engineering subject matter experts who are well versed in these topics to visit
our Call for Speakers page at https://engineeringconference.ca/call-for-speakers/
for a chance at leading these discussions. Please note that proposals focused on
specific disruptions in a stream will be favoured.
The first of the stream topics deals with the application of sustainable engineering
practices. "Green technology" has become more prominent than ever, as we have a
far better understanding of how human industrialization affects the world around
us. We have seen time and again that the design, implementation, and engineering of
environmentally friendly products and processes are the keys to a resilient society.
This stream topic aims to explore the various routes to sustainability, including
- though certainly not limited to - advances in renewable energy, green building
solutions, electric vehicles, and engineering technologies to combat climate change.
The conference's second stream topic is "Innovation," and deals with the design,
commercialization, and implementation of engineering technologies to progress
economic performance. The topic's focus is on ways in which engineering technology
may improve quality of life, by solving the technology and business related problems
of the future. Examples of such issues may include 5G infrastructure, artificial
intelligence, issues regarding data privacy, Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT),
smart infrastructure, and autonomous transportation.
The topic of the "Engineering Workforce" requires us to look at the current state
of the engineering workforce and the challenges it faces. Speakers are encouraged
to discuss issues such as the engineering talent gap, diversity and inclusion in the
profession, and the impact of market shifts on the engineering labour market.
Lastly, "Skills for Tomorrow" considers how engineers can best prepare for the
future. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented challenge and forced
many of us to adapt to entirely new working conditions. Engineers need to be flexible
leaders and critical thinkers, armed with both "hard" and "soft skills" to find the
solutions to tomorrow's problems.
Your expertise in any one of these fields will lend itself to a critical conversation
on the future of engineering. The deadline for applications is November 30, 2020
and each proposal will be evaluated by the Ontario Society of Professional Engineer's
selection committee based on four key criteria: relevance, speaker experience,
