ENGINEERING
with Darya Duma, P.Eng. and Tim Dunn
D
arya Duma, P.Eng. and Tim Dunn are project management
professionals as well as active participants of the
engineering community. Duma, who graduated from
University of Western Ontario with a Mechanical Engineering
degree, has been teaching Project Management with a focus on
engineering environments since 1995 and provides consulting and
training in project management and related topics. Duma gains her
project management experience from 15 years of working in the
elevator industry, working with a consulting company, then working
as a contractor, and finally with Canadian Standards Association.
Tim Dunn, who graduated from Carleton University with a
Mechanical Engineering degree, is a Senior Program Manager with
40 years of experience managing multi-disciplinary, fixed price
commercial, aerospace and defense programs ranging from $30M
to $500M. Dunn held the role of Director of Programs at MacDonald
Dettwiler & Associates (MDA, formerly SPAR Aerospace) for eight
years, managing the Program Management Office with 12 direct
Project/Program Manager reports.
In partnership with OSPE, Duma and Dunn have created a course
in Project Engineering . The Project Engineer must act as the
interface between the technical disciplines and the Project Manager.
Advancing to that position, an individual needs to know how to
manage development of the engineering product, usually including
the design process, lead the technical team, and communicate with
the Project Manager and client.
Project Engineering can be described as the process and
method by which to create a product. The product is one that
involves technology or technological change. There is not a clear
definition between project management and project engineering
but generic Project Management is moving more to the business
side of managing projects and moving away from a process-oriented
approach, potentially leaving a gap in managing the technical work.
There has been an upward evolution of the project engineering
role. Both Duma and Dunn experienced changes to the list of
