F
or international engineering graduates (IEGs), the journey
to licensure and employment can often be difficult and
overwhelming. Trying to navigate where to start and how
best to find your way forward requires a level of knowledge about
each journey that is not always easily accessible as a newcomer
to Canada.
Aarthi Vig and Judith Wright, OSPE's Bridging Project
Managers, took some time recently to chat with one of their
Bridging Program course participants about her arrival to Canada
and the steps she took in the last 18 months to put her Canadian
career plan in engineering into action. The participant requested
that her identity remain confidential, and so will be referred to only
as Leila for the remainder of this article.
Leila is a chemical engineering graduate from India with some
experience in her field. Upon her arrival to Canada a few years ago,
she decided to complete a Master's degree at a recognized Canadian
university. Once she had acquired her degree, she had two key goals
she wanted to achieve: the first was to find work in the engineering
field and the second was to begin the process for obtaining her
P.Eng. in the province of Ontario.
When asked to describe some of the barriers she encountered
when she first began her job search in Canada, Leila described a
common scenario of applying to jobs online for several months
without success. She also noted that the recruitment process from
her home country was significantly different from the process here
in Canada, and this left her at a loss about where to look for jobs and
what to highlight in her résumé. From a licensing perspective, Leila
was overwhelmed by the steps and uncertain about where and how
to begin the process in Ontario.
