The Opportunities and Challenges for
Hydrogen in Ontario
As Ontario and Canada rebuild from the impacts of COVID-19
and fight the threat of climate change, the development of lowcarbon
hydrogen is a strategic opportunity for our province and
country.
The Government of Ontario recently released a discussion
paper for public consultation that will inform the creation of the
province's first hydrogen strategy. The paper sets out a vision for
a new hydrogen economy in the province - one that will attract
investment, and lead to more job creation, while helping reduce
greenhouse gas emissions.
OSPE is supportive of a hydrogen economy grown in Ontario
that could bring in benefits, such as good engineering, trades and
manufacturing jobs.
OSPE had the pleasure of welcoming The Honourable Jeff
Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks,
for a keynote address on the development of the government's
hydrogen strategy.
Leaders from OSPE's Energy Task Force, Emily Thorn
Corthay, P.Eng., and Bob Waddell, P.Eng., then provided an
overview of the importance of such a field for the engineering
community. This lively discussion was complimented by a panel
discussion, featuring Rob Harvey, P.Eng., Director of Energy
Infrastructure in the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies
group at Cummins and Andrew Stuart, P.Eng., Co-Founder of
Hydrogen Optimized.
This webinar discussed Ontario's key technology, regulatory
and business opportunities in developing low-carbon hydrogen,
the potential for hydrogen to contribute to Ontario's 2030
greenhouse gas emission reduction target, as well as actions
Ontario can take to help local companies get ready to meet
expected international demand, among others.

Engineering for Change Leadership Series
Curated
by OSPE's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force,
the Engineering for Change Leadership Series provided
early to mid-career professionals with tips and strategies
on a variety of leadership-related topics. Designed to help
OSPE members develop relationships, network, and share
knowledge, participants were asked to watch a weekly video
and attend a group discussion. The videos covered a range
of important leadership topics discussed by subject matter
experts:
1. Building Confidence and Influence
Speaker: Susan Hollett, MSc., National Coordinator,
Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology
(SETT) Leadership Program
2. Negotiation
Speaker: Sara Flint, Project Manager and ICF Certified
Performance Coach
3. Navigating Biases and Their Resulting Barriers
Speaker: Brenda Okorogba, Learning Experience Designer
and Strategy Development Consultant, Momentswithbren
Consulting
4. Understanding Your Identity and Approaching
Balance
Speaker: Kinia Romanowska, Founder and CEO, Pros and
Babes
The series was followed by a live webinar on May 17, 2021,
where all four speakers came together for a final engaging
discussion. This series was an excellent example of the
engineering community coming together to learn, connect,
share, and support each other.
