OSPE HUB EXCHANGE
MEMBER PROFILE
Aaron Bell, P.Eng.
Municipal/Transportation Project
Engineer
Why did you join the OSPE Exchange Hubs and how has
your experience been so far?
I was interested in joining the Toronto/Ryerson OSPE Exchange
Hub because it seemed like a great opportunity for engagement
with the engineering community.
My experience thus far with the Toronto Hub has been great. I
enjoy connecting with peers and collaborating on different ways
to give back to engineers within the organization and beyond.
What do you enjoy most about being a part of the OSPE
Exchange Hubs?
I've enjoyed the opportunity to connect with people of numerous
engineering disciplines and backgrounds, in various phases of
their careers (from students and engineering interns, to retired
engineers). Working together has allowed us to contribute in
different ways towards the collective goal of delivering services
and providing value to the engineering community.
I've also enjoyed the opportunity to continue to grow as an
engineer through insight and shared experiences from others
in the hub, and by applying my own skills and knowledge to
contribute to hub endeavours. Iron truly does sharpen iron.
What does your volunteer work consist of?
The Toronto Hub regularly meets to develop ideas on activities
to contribute to the community. These endeavours include
preparation of seminars, panels, and written material that we
think would provide value to engineers. It's very rewarding to be
involved in these activities from the early stages of brainstorming
and development, through to execution and post-event debriefs.
My personal involvement has included participation in event
planning and coordination, and moderating a live panel, which
was a great experience.
How do you apply engineering knowledge, experience and
principles to your volunteer work?
The hub has allowed me to contribute based on various aspects of
my capabilities. I have been able to apply my technical knowledge
to endeavours focused on engineering issues and challenges. My
professional experience has been helpful during seminars and
activities catered to career development. General engineering

principals of design and problem solving also translate well to the
general coordination and execution of hub endeavours.
Why are you an OSPE member/why do you think the work
OSPE does is important?
I became a member of OSPE as a means to network and connect
with other people within my field, to benefit from OSPE's valuable
resources and programs, but to also provide my own contribution
to the organization and broader community via these initiatives. I
think that this is important, as well as the need to act as advocates
and ambassadors for our profession as a whole.
What issues in the profession are most important to you?
What should OSPE focus on?
I think that development of future generations of engineers will
be of continued importance. OSPE has been a great opportunity
to learn from engineers more experienced than myself, and to
also-even in the early stages of my own career-provide guidance
and assistance to newer engineers.
There are also broader societal issues, such as climate change
and world hunger, which engineers are- and will continue to play
a significant role in resolving. I believe that organizations such
as OSPE can contribute greatly to advancing discussions around
engineering and innovation related to these causes.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Join OSPE sooner! I joined OSPE several years into my career, but
I am excited when I see the opportunities available for engineering
students and new engineers looking for early engagement in the
community.
