Humility, Courage, Humanity, Judgement. This is what we need.
We need to add consciousness.
Taken together... we may be good at manipulation of physical
forces, but we need to work on consciousness.
We need to change!
OSPE President Mark Frayne said in his opening remarks at
the recent OSPE conference on the Future of Engineering: We
believe that engineers are obligated to lead. We have a moral or
legal duty to lead. And he goes on to say: Engineers have powerful
analytical and problem-solving skills and must use these to start
critical conversations on issues impacting society.
Well said, but we need to add skills. We need to drive
conversations. We need to change our culture. We need to add
consciousness. We need to be leaders.
We are teaching leadership at the University of Toronto. ILead
is the Troost Institute for Leadership Education in Engineering.
ILead was established in 2010. Every year we teach thousands of
undergraduate students and hundreds of graduate students; we
do research in the workplace and the classroom; we partner with
universities across the country and we partner with engineering
companies.
Our Vision
Engineers leading change to build a better world. Our Mission:
To inspire engineering students to identify as leaders; To equip
students for lifelong leadership development; and to inform
our programs with workplace and classroom research on
engineering leadership. The future has arrived. The future of
engineering is the Leader-Engineer:
* Analytical and social
* Assertive and responsive
* Active and reflective
* Building and nurturing
* Rational and instinctive
* Focused and contextual
In sum, a sociotechnical engineer, skilled in manipulating
physical forces with consciousness, ready to lead change, to
build a better world.
More than ever future engineers
