"We all have our own biases, so we
can't expect to change minds with one
seminar. Supporting and retaining
underrepresented groups in engineering
and ICT takes consistent investment and
effort from many fronts," adds Ryan, who
is also passionate about exposing high
school students to the tech sector.
In 2017, Ryan and her colleague Adam
Nadeau, Site Engagement Coordinator,
launched Nokia Ottawa's Future Tech
program to do just that. The program
hired twenty-one grade eleven students
- eleven of whom were young women -
for summer internships.
"The tech world can be a difficult
environment to understand until you've
experienced it," says Nadeau. "Most
people have a clear understanding of
what doctors, lawyers or teachers do,
but the engineering and tech sector

are so broad, that many people don't
understand what engineers really do. The
Future Tech program exposes students
to career opportunities they may never
have considered."
Mentors working in departments
across the Nokia Ottawa campus
host student interns who take part
in technical, hands-on engineering
work. Complemented by enrichment
activities, including career development
workshops and lunch-and-learns with
senior leaders, the students develop
practical skills essential for success in the
working world.
From a business perspective,
it's proven that diversity promotes
innovation. As a hi-tech company,
Nokia relies on innovation to remain
hi-tech. The company's nimble approach
to employee-led programs and networks

of support like StrongHer and Future
Tech, strengthens motivation and morale.
"I can honestly say that Nokia's
commitment to equity, diversity
and community-building has made
work more fun," says Knight Agard.
"Embracing diversity is a 'win-win-win'
for Nokia, its employees and the public
we serve. Diversity simply has a high ROI
- no one loses."
