s governments, academics, economists, and
journalists have noted, Canada's population is
greying. Longer life expectancy, low birth rates, and
aging baby boomers mean that there are more people
in Canada aged 65 and over than there are under 15 years
of age, according to Statistics Canada.
In 2011, an estimated five million Canadians were 65
years of age or older. This number is expected to double
in the next 25 years, and will reach 10 million by 2036.
Such a demographic shift will have numerous
impacts. For instance, succession planning will become
increasingly important for businesses as experienced
workers hit retirement. Additionally, as more and more
seniors continue to work past the traditional retirement
age, employers will need to address the challenges of an
intergenerational workforce and provide training to help
older workers adapt to new practices and technologies.
The health care sector will also face significant pressure.
