expected of young people today than was expected of my
generation, for example. I look at our undergraduate and
graduate students at the University of Toronto and I think
that they are really amazing. They excel in the academics,
but at the same time they excel in sports, art, languages,
they have travelled the world, they have great manners,
they are socially responsible etc. This makes me think that
their parents did a really great job. This is something to
look up to.
What's your life motto?
Ask big questions.
What's the best advice anyone has given you?
"It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission." This
is advice that the former Chair of Chemical Engineering
& Applied Chemistry, Doug Reeve, P.Eng., Ph.D., gave
to a group of young assistant professors during my early
teaching days. This advice has so many layers and can be
used as a motto. At first it sounds like it is encouraging
you to break the rules, but this is not necessarily the case,
although thinking outside of the box is sort of like rulebreaking. However, very often one will hear people say that
something cannot be done because of A, B, C, etc., and
those are usually not the real reasons. In those cases, it is
best just to go and get the job done.
Which scientist or engineer inspires you?
Nikola Tesla inspires me. He was a visionary. He was able
to envision the future we live in right now and work to
enable it to happen.
What book are you currently reading?
I read books that are totally not related to what I do at
work. For example, I am reading one about the history of
Celts right now.
What is your favourite thing to do outside of teaching
and working in the lab?
Riding my bike, swimming, relaxing with my kids and
family, going on vacation (of course, I think this applies
to everyone), travelling, and exploring new cities and new
cultures.
