Meet Azadeh Yadollahi, Ph.D., an exceptional leader in rehabilitation research and a social entrepreneur. As a Scientist with the Toronto Rehabilitation InstituteUHN and an Assistant Professor with the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto, her research focuses on developing convenient and wearable technologies to improve respiratory disorders during sleep. Dr. Azadeh's research has produced ground-breaking achievements in the field of sleep research and has made huge strides in discovering solutions for health issues like sleep apnea, a common disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or shallow breaths during sleep. Dr. Azadeh's current research aims to develop and validate a compact and convenient device (The Patch) that can record multiple physiological signals during sleep, such as respiratory sounds, and diagnose sleep apnea severity across multiple nights. With an eye to future innovation, Dr. Azadeh recently secured a $900,000 grant with the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and Ontario Research Fund to develop the Soundproof Laboratory to Examine Sleep Disorder Breathing (SleepdB) at iDAPT. SleepdB will be the only sound-proof sleep laboratory in the world. The sound-proof feature of SleepdB will facilitate the development and validation of original sound sensing technologies to monitor physiological functions such as cardio-respiratory sounds during sleep. SleepdB will include a full in-laboratory polysomnography for monitoring sleep in a controlled condition. Two portable polysomnography systems will also be used for at-home studies, along with other equipment to assess cardiac and respiratory function such as an ultrasound machine. Innovative and entrepreneurial minds like Dr. Azadeh are creating major impacts in the field of rehabilitation, pushing the boundaries of traditional scientific output and creating new standards for how applied rehabilitation research can solve real problems.
