Rise of the entrepreneur RYERSON LE ADS SHIF T IN POS T-SECONDARY EDUC ATION BY SHELDON LEVY I n the 21st century, the context for work is beginning to change, sped by the immediacy of global connectedness, and encouraged by emerging technologies. In this developing environment, it is clear that Ryerson has the responsibility to provide an education that focuses on innovation and produces both great employees and great employers. Taking the lead, the university is attracting international attention for pioneering an exciting entrepreneurial shift in post-secondary evolution. Chancellor Lawrence Bloomberg offers a great perspective from his own experience and leadership. In his installation speech, he stated that everyone is an entrepreneur who believes in making a difference to the status quo. The strength of innovation, he said, is that it is a mindset, not a job. Whether you are an employer or employee, you are an entrepreneur when you recognize new opportunities and have the courage to pursue them. At Ryerson, the Digital Media Zone lit the spark. Entrepreneurial education is now seen as relevant to all programs and research, and a way to take time-honoured qualities forward in a new era. While emerging technologies are new, the strongest achievers are still the ones who are passionate, principled, tireless and driven by dreams. The Ryerson graduates profiled in this issue prove the value of connecting academic study to real life. We are proud of our history of responding to the needs of society, and an institutional mission that unites our alumni in this shared commitment, along the full spectrum of programs and years. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Early Childhood Studies Early Learning Centre, we are mindful of nurturing the next generation of Ryerson students and entrepreneurs who will take the world by storm. This continuity, and our responsibility for its support and encouragement, is the very best part of what universities do. n SUMMER 2013 • ryerson university Magazine 3
