researcher at Ryerson -
nine since he was hired.
* In 2016, Pralat was
appointed as the new
assistant director of industry
liaison for the prestigious
Fields Institute for Research
in Mathematical Sciences.

NOT EVERY RISING ACADEMIC would be attracted
to a new department within a net-new faculty.
But Dr. Pawel Pralat, a professor in the
Department of Mathematics, sees a big upside
to such an environment. "All the people around
me, especially in the administration, care
about growth and want to help and are open
to opportunities."
And since coming to Ryerson in 2011,
he has never looked back. Today, Pralat -
whose main research interests include graph
theory with applications to complex networks
such as telecommunications, health and
disease, and social networks - has more than
100 collaborators around the world. His
industry partnerships include Alcatel, Facebook,
Blackberry, Microsoft and The Globe and Mail.
He's also a strong proponent of innovation
and the need to build bridges between his
multidisciplinary team of mathematicians,
computer scientists, social scientists and
engineers, and the budding entrepreneurs at
Ryerson's Digital Media Zone.
Over the past five years, Pralat has seen
rising interest in applied mathematics both
from students and the outside world. "When
I started, there were 40 students in the class
I was teaching, graph theory and networks.
Today that class has 160 students, plus a
lengthening waiting list."
As for industrial collaborations, he says,
"I'm at the point where there are definitely
more companies that would like to work
with us than I can process."
In the next five years, he'd like to have
enough capacity to handle all the companies
that reach out to Ryerson's math department.
"It would be nice to be able to build a group,
a multidisciplinary and international group
that can collectively work on these problems,"
says Pralat.
