Dr. Chul Kim has always
received praise from the people
that matter most - his students

Applying Creativity, Persistence,
Caring - and Humour
to Kim, says, "Working under his supervision
and witnessing the students' satisfaction with
his performance has inspired me to become a
university professor."
Another of his students, Kristine Yan
(Financial Mathematics '17), says of Kim,
"He explains the theory to a new concept with
simplicity so that the content is easy to grasp
in the lecture. More importantly though are
the problems he solves in class. For math to
be understood for many students, problems
should be solved so that students can see
how the theory is applied. Dr. Kim does an
amazing job at providing examples that start
off easily and gradually increase in difficulty.
Furthermore, Prof. Kim enriches the classroom
environment with his light sense of humour."
Kim received the Dean's Teaching Award
in 2015.

AT RYERSON, HE'S KNOWN AS A mathematics
professor who can make calculus fun. Stories
about Dr. Chul Kim often reference his use
of technology and classroom props to create
teachable moments - he's been known to use
apples to demonstrate volume and integration,
for example, and hand out yellow cards to
disruptive students.
But stories about Kim invariably also note
his caring and commitment. Since joining
Ryerson in 2001, thousands of students
have benefited from his enthusiastic and
passionate pedagogy. Outside the classroom,
his exceptional organizational skills, dedication
and industriousness have earned Kim the
respect of his colleagues and the teaching
assistants he supervises.
