Pi Day treats the community
to math education in the
sweetest way

FOR A SMALL AND RELATIVELY young department,
creative outreach activities have been key. At
Ryerson, on March 14, Pi Day has been a raging
success here. And celebrations just keep on
getting better.
Math professor Dr. Pawel Pralat says Ryerson's
first Pi Day events in 2012 were modest. "We started
it as a little event just for our students and faculty in
the conference room." By 2017, the Department of
Mathematics was serving up 2,400 slices of pie to
the greater Ryerson community.
Along the way, organizers added prizes, gave
presentations (including Pi trivia and mnemonic
poetry tips on how to memorize the first 40 or
so digits of Pi) and received generous donations
from community partners such as Metro and the
Ryerson Book Store.
Pralat says Pi Day treats the public to a fun nonthreatening encounter with math: "It's a good
excuse for us to celebrate and spread the word that
mathematics is there, and it's behind everyday life."
