for Clinical Careers

In 2015, Ryerson
began offering a
CAMPEP accredited
option in MSc
and PhD programs

IN 2013, THE DEPARTMENT MARKED a significant
milestone, as the graduate program in
Biomedical Physics with an Option in Medical
Physics received full accreditation from the
Commission on Accreditation of Medical
Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP).
What is the significance? The external
review confirms a program's compliance and
appropriateness to train students in a clinical
career. The CAMPEP Board of Directors
granted accreditation on December 31,
2015, with an automatic extension through
December 31, 2017 upon completion of
acceptable annual reports. In other words,
the program achieved the maximum
accreditation duration for a new program.
Today, Ryerson offers a CAMPEP
accredited option in MSc and PhD programs
for students seeking to enter a medical
physics residency program in at least one
subspecialty (radiation oncology, diagnostic
radiology, or nuclear medicine) and to
assume a clinical practice in medical physics.

This year, one of our graduates, Raphael
Jakubovic (MSc '17), was accepted into - and
will soon begin - a radiation oncology physics
residency in the Department of Radiation
Medicine at Northwell Health in Long
Island, N.Y. Jakubovic, whose thesis focus
was the integration of optical imaging into a
radiotherapy setting, says CAMPEP training
provides an excellent understanding of the
requirements of a clinical physicist - plus
real clinical exposure through a shadowing
component.
"The shadowing comprised a variety
of components including brachytherapy,
volumetric modulated arc (VMAT) therapy,
intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT),
stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), and
gamma knife radiosurgery. I was given the
opportunity to see the entire clinical workflow
including radiation treatment simulation,
contouring and planning, and delivery.
I was also able to grasp the importance of
an interdisciplinary approach."
