Technologist Graham
Pearson supports lab
education and engaging
outreach activities
of Awesome (SoA). A student enrichment group,
SoA members develop novel skills and technical
expertise via interactive projects. To date, the
group's designs have been featured at Toronto
events such as Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, Maker
Faire, Science Rendezvous and TEDx events.
In 2012, Pearson and an interdisciplinary
student group produced the Light Seeds
installation for Nuit Blanche. The project saw
almost 2,000 red-green-blue LEDs plus various
sensors installed on a campus pedestrian
overpass and let audience members use
controllers to paint a light show. Pearson likened
it to a "colourful etch-a-sketch."
More recently, he's helped mentor students
in the 2015 Student Spaceflight Experiments
Program and the Science Discovery Zone
(SDZ). "We've launched a science education
company called BrainSTEAM, where we have
developed a portable computer lab we can
take into the community to teach science and
tech workshops."

SINCE HE JOINED THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS in
2010 as a technologist, Graham Pearson has
had a profound impact - both within the Faculty
of Science and beyond.
On the one hand, Pearson is an integral
part of daily department life, supporting
undergraduate and graduate lab education
and research. Students and faculty talk about
Pearson's willingness to share his wide-ranging
expertise, improve student outcomes and
develop new approaches to education.
But his dedication to Ryerson and physics
goes well beyond his day job. With a mission to
create new "friends of physics" in and outside
of Ryerson, Pearson organizes everything from
physics-related workshops to gigantic artmeets-physics installations.
Through Ryerson's science outreach office,
he has helped run electronics workshops with
high school groups, including a project to build
heartbeat sensors. Around campus, Pearson is
probably best known for founding the Society
