I got the teaching.
It took away my
anger. I started
to learn about
myself and my
belonging.

ROXANNE KROPF-SALAMI was two months old when
she met her new mother. It was 1985 on the Tsay Keh
Dene First Nation in the Northern Interior of British
Columbia. The "Sixties Scoop" that removed Indigenous children from their families into the child welfare
system was still in practice in Canada. In fear of losing
her newborn, Roxanne's teenage mother asked Norma,
a German-Mennonite teacher on the reserve, to
adopt Roxanne.
A graduate of Seneca's Social Service Worker -
Immigrants and Refugees program, Roxanne says that
