Challenge accepted.
That's a term that will be part of Seneca's
marketing in the months to come, but it
is more than just random words. It is a
reflection of the nature of our students, the
success of our graduates and how Seneca
has continued to define its place in the
province, the country and now the world.
In 1965 then-minister of education Bill
Davis took on the challenge of creating a
new kind of postsecondary system. Following in his footsteps, leaders like our first
president Bill Newnham rose to the challenge of forming a new kind of school with
programs in rapidly transforming areas
such as computing and aviation.
Today, Seneca accepts the challenge
of preparing students for careers in the
midst of dizzying change in the economy
and society. It's a challenge we undertake
with relish.
This fall we officially opened our Centre
for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship, better known as CITE. It's an
amazing mashup of high-tech labs, collaborative classrooms, entrepreneurial spaces
and research centres. At Newnham Campus, we've brought together virtually all
of our technology and business programs,
building on the cross-disciplinary approach
we've adopted across all of our faculties.
We also recently opened Odeyto, the new
home for First Peoples@Seneca. It's an outstanding space - in fact an award-winning
design - and was so beautiful that it was
the poster photograph for the advertising
that accompanied Doors Open in Toronto.
But whether it's CITE, Odeyto or a Seneca building that's been standing for decades, the true magic is what goes on inside
these great new spaces.
And whether it is creating a safe and
supportive home away from home for our
Indigenous students, or nurturing ventures
started by student entrepreneurs under the

guidance of HELIX mentors, or seeing the
incredible results when faculty from two
entirely different areas collaborate to support a student-led project, it's the people
who make the difference.
When Mr. Davis created the college system its mandate was to offer "career-oriented, postsecondary education and training to
assist individuals in finding and keeping
employment, to meet the needs
of employers and the changing work environment and to support the economic and
social development of their local and
diverse communities."
Spoken in the 1960s, those were prescient
words. Our graduates are finding careers in
fields that didn't exist then. Calling it a changing work environment sounds like a massive understatement. And the internationalization of our school and communities has
brought a whole new meaning to diverse.
Through it all, the amazing faculty and
staff of Seneca have cemented our leadership in the system, and have never accepted
"good enough" as being, well, good enough.
Leaders we are, and leaders we will be.
Challenge accepted.
