Travel Medical Insurance: Not just for Out of Country but for Out of Province, too | P RO V I DE D B Y C A P R I IN S U RANCE R ecently, the news carried a story about a Nanaimo man’s father who suffered an aortic aneurysm while traveling in Ontario. After emergency surgery, the father required rehabilitation therapy, costing about $2,000 per day. This treatment would be covered in BC, but not by MSP in Ontario. As the effectiveness of the rehab would be affected by any delay, he was forced to fly home in order to receive treatment, an option that the doctors advised against. Although MSP has reciprocal agreements between the provinces, the coverage varies between each. Most physicians in other Canadian provinces and territories (except Quebec) will bill their own provincial health plan, provided you present your valid BC CareCard. The provinces recover the funding monthly between each other. However, MSP does not cover the services of health care providers other than physicians, so, for example, treatment by a chiropractor or physical therapist would not be covered. It is very important to know that MSP does not cover fees charged for ambulance service outside BC, most notably, Medi-vac or air ambulance. To read more, please visit the MSP website at www.health.gov.bc.ca/msp. So what does a private travel medical insurer provide? A whole lot for your money! Coverage and limits vary between plans but these are some of them: Semi private hospital accommodation, lab and x-ray tests performed at the time of the initial emergency, rental of crutches or hospital type bed and the cost of splints, trusses, braces or other approved prosthetic appliances, emergency out-patient services, prescription medication for the covered illness or injury, Chiropractor, Physio therapist. Licensed Ambulance services, ground, sea and air, including mountain or sea evacuation, and a medical attendant, if required. Dental emergency and accidental dental. Transportation of family or friend to the insured’s bedside or return of the traveling companion to their home province, cremation expenses at the place of death or return of the deceased to their permanent residence, return of vehicle or watercraft to home or rental agency. Many working people will have such coverage under their extended health plan at work. However, those who don’t should absolutely consider buying this coverage either on a single trip basis, or if you frequently travel to another province and/or another country within a year, an annual policy may be a better choice. Annual policies allow travel for a certain length of trip (options are available) on an unlimited basis during a one year period. These policies can also be purchased for the whole family at discounted rates. The informed and professional staff at any branch of Capri Insurance would be happy to explain the coverages and advise the limits of each in further details or answer any questions you may have.
