Who doesn't love award ceremonies? They're exciting, glamorous and festive,
bringing smiles to faces and a feeling of accomplishment for winners. Each year, I
enjoy watching the Grammys, Emmys and other award programs for the fine
clothes and performances, and I like to see which artists are the best of the best!
It's even more special when recognition comes from your peers. This holds true
no matter what type of award and what skill is being recognized. Recognition leads
to accolades and appreciation for the work done. Even the humblest among us
deserve being recognized and celebrated for achievements.
While award shows for performers are enjoyable, I get much more pleasure from
DFI's awards because the winners are people I know and care about. They're part of
our DFI community and contribute so much to the industry. Members deserve to be
honored for their expertise, innovation, ingenuity, problem-solving, service and
contributions; and it is their peers who nominate them for these prestigious awards
and who judge and select them.
At our most recent annual conference, DFI45, we had an online celebration that
was different, but special all the same. (See the video on DFI's YouTube channel.) The
Outstanding Project Award (OPA) was the highlight presentation during the awards
reception; our DFI of India founder and chair, Dr. K.S. Rama Krishna, was duly
recognized as the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) recipient. Recognition was
also given to grant, scholarship and paper competition winners. We honored others
during the business meeting, such as our Traveling Lecturer, David B. Paul, P.E., and
President's Awards recipients. Looking forward, we are excited to recognize other
awardees: Recipients of the Ben C. Gerwick Award for Innovation in the Design and
Construction of Marine Foundations and the Osterberg Memorial Lecturer will be
honored at the upcoming IFCEE 2021 this May.
So how can you be part of this celebration? How can your company or colleague
be recognized and make DFI history, showing that they rise above the competition
and have expertise to be highlighted in the industry? Submit one of your amazing
projects for consideration by the OPA judges; nominate a colleague for the DSA or to
serve as the Traveling Lecturer; propose your groundbreaking product or technique
as a possible C. William Bermingham or Ben C. Gerwick Innovation awardee.
Deadlines for all these awards are quickly approaching - February 1 for the
Gerwick Award and Traveling Lecture, and April 15 for the OPA, DSA and
Bermingham awards. You can give back to the deep foundations community by
helping someone you respect and admire, perhaps a mentor or mentee, be considered
for the list of recipients. And your outstanding project could make the cover of this
magazine in its September/October issue.
So get involved and have a deeper connection when it comes to celebrating and
congratulating the winners with me at the next annual conference in Las Vegas.
