PEOPLE & COMPANIES
Bernhardt Hertlein (1949-2022) passed
away surrounded by family on Friday,
December 9, 2022, in Waukegan, Illinois. He
was a loving and supportive husband of 50
years, a caring and inspiring father, as well
as a proud and adoring grandfather. A wellknown
expert in nondestructive testing, Bernie was a
trustee on the DFI Educational Trust Board of Directors and
past chair of the DFI Testing and Evaluation Committee. In
2015 he was awarded DFI's Distinguished Service Award, the
highest honor bestowed to an individual.
Bernie was born in West Sussex, England, and moved
to the U.S. in 1989.
It was working for Testconsult that brought him to the
states, and then to STS Consultants, before moving on to
GEI in Vernon Hills, Illinois. Bernie was a member of The
International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC),
ASTM International, DFI, The Moles, NDTitans and other
organizations, and was a proud supporter of the DFI
Women in Deep Foundations Committee. He was
passionate about his career throughout his lifetime, and
thoroughly enjoyed being a mentor to so many. One of the
things that pleased him the most was sparking an interest
in engineering in younger people.
Bernie enjoyed working with his hands and making
many different things, including, but not limited to,
models, trinkets and furniture. He was a plane and train
enthusiast and was a member of both the Experimental
Aircraft Association and Commemorative Air Force.
Bernie was fond of traveling, spending time in the garden
and had a lifelong passion for playing, listening to and
creating music of all kinds, and encouraging his
granddaughters to do the same.
Bernie is survived by his two daughters, Sarah
Hertlein and Kimberley (Scott) Komen; granddaughters,
Alexandria and Kylie; and other beloved family members,
friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Gaynor Hertlein on June 17, 2022.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
The family would appreciate donations in his honor to the
Clyde N. Baker, Jr. Foundation Engineering Scholarship,
www.dfitrust.org, or the American Heart Association,
