REGIONAL REPORT
DFI's Middle East Regional Chapter
was busy in 2022 with many events to
establish valuable engagement among the geotechnical
professions in the Middle East and North African countries.
We conducted several online monthly webinar offerings,
Tea Time Technical Talks and developed a theme for the Big
5 International Building & Construction show under the
title " Sustainable Geotechnical Engineering Summit, "
which provided many resources for local members and
geoprofessionals.
The chapter is continuing to organize these talks on a
bimonthly basis from January - November 2023 (see page 33).

Attendees interested in obtaining Continuing Professional
Development (CPD) credits can register for a $50 fee.
The Big 5
DFI collaborated with The Big 5 International Building &
Construction Show organizer DMG once again by presenting a
one-day workshop on December 5, 2022, on the Dubai
Building Code and Eurocode 7. Case study topics included
design of ground improvement, piling, shoring, artificial
intelligence and digitization. The event was very successful,
and many rich presentations and discussions were carried
out during the one-day event.
Website to Be Launched
Tea Time Technical Talks
Four webinars have been conducted, starting with the first on
August 2, 2022, with Emad Sharif, e.Construct, in
collaboration with Bengt Fellenius, Ph.D., a charter member
of DFI, presenting " Bi-Directional Static Load Tests. " Each
" Talk " took place on the first Tuesday of the month.
September 6: " Advances on Geotechnical Investigations, "
by Karim Khalaf, Fugro
October 4: " Biogeotechnical Engineering, " by Edward
Kavazanjian, Ph.D., Arizona State University
November 1: " Artificial Intelligence in Geotechnical
Engineering, " by Rodaina Aboul Hosn of ESTP Paris
The chapter is launching a new website that will mimic the
main DFI website and focus on providing past event
proceedings as well as a resources on topics relevant to our
region. We are also planning to highlight local research and
will welcome feedback from website visitors on their
experience in the research topics being featured.
Leadership
As we continue to grow the chapter, we are inviting members
from 22 countries to represent DFI and lead DFI activities in
their individual countries to promote collaboration,
education, communication and networking.
