entitled " Vibration in Construction:
Understanding and Guidance. " The pile
driving industry faces a public relations
issue when it comes to the perceived
negative impacts from vibrations, and
committee members are working to
create a technical resource to help
contractors and other interested parties
successfully manage pile driving
projects when vibrations are voiced as a
concern. Currently, a subcommittee is
working on creating and editing this
document for internal review with the
goal to circulate it for practical use in
the industry.
Another ongoing initiative involves
developing a database for vibratory pile
installation. The use of " driving criteria "
for driven piles is relatively accepted,
but rarely is a " penetration rate versus
axial resistance " used to accept bearing
piles installed with vibratory drivers.
There are several variables from
vibratory pile installation that are rarely
collected but could help engineers gain
confidence with this concept. Collecting
this data and compiling it in a database
will help to establish norms and trends
for the data. To populate such a database,
the committee has created a form and
requests practitioners download and fill
out the form on their next project, and
then submit it to the database. Access
the form at www.dfi.org/communities/
technologies-and-methods/drivenpile-comm.
With more data, engineers
and contractors may gain a comfort level
with vibratory installation criteria for
bearing resistance.
Finally, the committee is working to
develop a library of case histories for
cost-effective pile projects. By creating
a library of case histories that illustrate
how driven pile foundations can take
advantage of cost-saving design and
installation factors to contribute to costeffective
projects, we will provide
pract i t ioners wi th examples of
numerous applications for driven piles.
Please visit the committee webpage for
details on the initiative and how to
submit a project.
As a committee that encompasses a
large and diverse cross-section of DFI
membership, participation from all
stakeholders is encouraged so that this
committee may continue to be a
leading voice and technical resource
for the driven pile industry. Our group
generally holds bimonthly virtual
meetings to discuss ongoing projects
and hosts in-person meetings at DFI's
SuperPile and Annual Conference.

Electric Power Systems Foundations
The Electric Power Systems Foundations
Committee continues efforts on
several projects to improve deep
foundation design and construction
practices for the electric transmission
line and substation industry. These
include a groundbreaking guidance
document, new guideline document
initiatives and a phased research
program for instrumentation of deep
foundations.
An industry guidance document on
the topic of deep foundations for support
of electric system transmission lines is
nearing completion. A member subcommittee,
along with industry colleagues,
worked to resolve detailed
comments provided by technical
committee members and the document
was submitted to DFI's Technical
Advisory Committee (TAC) in June.
The committee intends to have the
guidance document ready for presentation
later this year around DFI's
Annual Conference in Seattle.
The Electric Power Systems Foundations
Committee polled more than 80
selected DFI members and other
foundation experts in the electric power
industry to rank the topics of greatest
interest to the power engineering
community for the development of
future position papers or industry
guidance documents. Two topics rose to
the top as part of the survey responses:
development of guidelines for the use of
pile groups to support power industry
st ructures and development of
guidance on combined loading cases for

transmission line foundations related
to external conditions such as seismicity,
liquefaction, scour and ice flow.
Subcommittees were formed at June's
SuperPile conference to move forward
with these projects.
During the Midyear Committee
Week meeting in April, committee
members decided to initiate a project to
monitor in-service transmission line
drilled shaft reinforced concrete monopole
foundations and structures to
better understand the impacts of
weather on foundation performance.
The research proposal will be the
committee's first submission for DFIfunded
research and will focus on a
proof-of-concept first phase, with
planned partnership from a cooperating
utility, industry instrumentation
specialist firms, and a research institute
or university. A working group led by
Greg Parent, P.E., S.E., Ulteig Consulting
Engineers, is developing a detailed
scope for the research and will prepare a
draft proposal for committee review.
The American Society of Civil
Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering
Institute is developing a manual of
practice for transmission line and
