during the two-day event and some
essential keynotes were delivered by
eminent specialists of different disciplines
in the deep foundation industry.
Site visits in Haarlem and Amsterdam
offered a firsthand look at innovative
practices in the field. DFI Europe
strongly supports this initiative, and we
will try to gather a small international
group of specialists to develop guidance
documents to help the geotechnical
community on foundation reuse.
Our next major event will be the
International Conference on Deep
Foundations and Ground Improvement
that DFI and the European Federation of
Foundation Contractors are holding
jointly in Bruges May 21-23, 2025, titled
Geotechnics Reimagined: The New
Frontiers in Ground Engineering. Please
mark these dates in your calendar and
plan to attend! This will be a memorable
event in this marvelous medieval city
with a fantastic technical and professional
program, festive social events,
and dynamic demonstrations of new
tools such as virtual reality, drones and
3D printing in the impressive exhibition
hall of the Bruges Conference and
Convention Center. The conference will
show what is innovative right now and
explore what the future looks like for
ground engineering.
In the meantime, we are also keen to
encourage you to attend the next
European Conference on Soil Mechanics
and Geotechnical Engineering in Lisbon,
August 26-30. This important conference
is supported by DFI Europe, and
we hope to have the opportunity to
welcome you all there.
DFI Europe Member: Aarsleff - Deep Foundations For Industrial Upgrades in the U.K.
Over the past 18 months, Aarsleff Ground Engineering has
been carrying out a wide range of ground engineering works
at an industrial site on the English-Welsh border. The
brownfield site is being upgraded to shift the existing
structure's output from a paper mill to cardboard, corrugated
packaging and tissue paper production. The upgraded mill
will facilitate more domestic manufacturing of paper-based
materials with the aim of reducing reliance on importation.
The project is being carried
out by Turkish contractor
ENKA and is its first cornerstone
project within the U.K.
The deep foundation work
began with an initial phase of
driven precast concrete piling.
Aarsleff received an initial
design, which suggested the
installation of more than
18,000 pi les to create a
foundation for the new mill,
with large section sizes. The
firm reviewed this design,
suggesting an alternative
following analysis by its
design engineers, which
reduced the number of piles to
8,500. This aimed to mitigate
the following risks associated
with the project: high potential
for shallow obstructions due to

existing foundations, potential for densification of the underlying
cohesionless materials during installation of such a high
quantity of piles within close proximity, vibration for existing
structures, rising fuel costs and uncertain material rates in an
unpredictable climate. After trial piling occurred and the contract
was agreed, Aarsleff commenced piling on site. It became
clear that communication would play a key part in delivering
success and value for the client on this project. Dedication to
communication and the strength
of the team from commercial,
design, operations and preconstruction
proved fruitful as the
first phase has opened up a
range of other opportunities on
the development.
The work has been exInstalling
driven precast concrete piles
panded to include 518 m
(1,700 ft) of temporary driven
sheet piles, 476 continuous
flight auger piles and 350
sectional flight auger piles, the
latter being installed within an
existing building by Aarsleff's
specialist bored piling subsidiary,
Cannon Piling. The
project is due to be completed
in its entirety by the second
quarter of 2025 and will facilitate
an upgrade in the U.K.'s
industrial infrastructure.
