industry expertise in drill and shoot, soft
ground tunneling machine operations,
shaft excavation and support, roadheader
excavation and support, pipe installations
in tunnels, cellular grout operations, pipe
jacking and microtunneling.

Matt Roberts

Roberts graduated from the University
of Nebraska with a degree in civil
engineering and has held roles ranging
from field engineer and estimator to lead
superintendent and business line manager.
He's a 26-year veteran with the Kiewit
organization, following in the footsteps of
his grandfather, father and uncle who all
led successful Kiewit careers.

Fine Scholarships
The Trust has awarded two Manuel Fine
Civil Engineering Scholarships, each in the
amount of U.S. $2,500.

University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

became interested in the systemic
challenges of Northern communities. As a
result, the research topic for her M.S. in
civil engineering is the Impact of Surface
Material Type on Rate of Downward Heat
Transfer in Permafrost Soil.
Patrick Wilkon is a senior studying civil
engineering and management at McMaster
University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
After graduation, Wilkon plans to work as a
municipal infrastructure engineering
consultant or as a tunneling contractor,
integrating his capabilities and interests in
deep foundations to provide innovative
solutions that solve daily challenges in
transit, water and wastewater transmission.
The Manuel Fine Civil Engineering
Scholarship Fund was established in 2013
and honors Manuel Fine (1929-2018),
who served DFI for 24 years in many roles,
including trustee, president, executive
director, managing editor of Deep
Foundations, and in recent years, as
publisher of the DFI Journal. The fund
provides scholarships for civil engineering
students attending universities in the
province of Ontario. Fine was a graduate of
the University of Toronto.

The 2019 recipient of the $5,000
George P. Kelley Memorial Scholarship at
Drexel University is junior Andrew David
Risser. Once he receives his B.S. in civil
engineering, Risser plans to pursue an M.S.
in geotechnical engineering.

Apply for At-Large Scholarships
Applications are being accepted until May
15, 2020, for the Trust's At-Large Scholarship program.
Several At-Large Scholarships ranging
from $2,000-$5,000 each are being
awarded in 2020. They can be used for
funding tuition, fees, books and/or living
expenses. Applicants must be enrolled full
time in a U.S. college or university; be pursuing a graduate or undergraduate degree
in an accredited civil, geotechnical engineering or related deep foundations curriculum or an undergraduate degree in
construction management; have a minimum 3.0 GPA; and demonstrate an interest
in the deep foundations industry and
