Pile design
deep-water habitats of fish and other marine animals near the
shoreline would be disturbed as little as possible. In addition,
the original Pier 54 and Pier 55 piles remain on either side of
the new pier to continue to provide aquatic habitat.
Each pile also had an intricate, unconventional
connection where the pot would eventually connect to the
pile. Extensive regulatory requirements for the marine
environment prevented the normal cast-in-place connection
to be used between the pile and the pot; that consideration
was taken because the bottom of the concrete plug was to
extend below the spring high-tide line. This problem was
solved by designing each pile as a solid precast concrete pile
with imbedded steel beams for the connection. With each pot
carefully set and the strands at the cut-off surface protected
internally, the connection seam was then sealed with grout to
protect the imbedded steel from exposure to the elements.
Conclusion
Little Island is New York City's newest, largest and most
unusual park on a pier. Its $260 million total project cost was
largely privately funded, but the pier is operated by Little
Island Org and managed by the Hudson River Park Trust.
Sitting on a new 2.5-acre pier in Hudson River Park, Little
Island joins other former industrial piers on Manhattan's west
side that have been redeveloped for recreation. The park's
man-made hills provide views of the Hudson River and New
York City, and its paths with their rolling grade through trees
and plantings connect several open-air performance spaces
with places for passive recreation.

Addressing Environmental
Concerns
Construction was performed by Weeks
Marine from floating barges and utilized
a 350 ton (317,515 kg) capacity crane to
drive the piles and to set pots. Picking
weights for the pots were up to 75 tons
(68,039 kg). Pile driving was performed
in two consecutive years so that the
