construction sites where a few specialty tests could be
conducted on bentonite or polymer-supported drilled shafts or
diaphragm walls. The specialty testing will be performed by
the research team, and very little is needed aside from a little
bit of time on each jobsite. If you're interested in helping by
simply allowing access, please contact our committee to be
coordinated with the research team.
As you can see, it's a busy time for the Drilled Shaft
Committee, but with many relevant topics to investigate; it's
also wonderful and humbling to have active volunteers doing
the work!

Seismic and Lateral Loads
The Se i smi c and La t e r a l Loads
Committee focuses on the unique issues
of seismic design and construction and
other related lateral load issues that
apply in marine applications, ice and
permafrost regions. The committee
continues its robust support of research
projects that impact the practice of deep foundation analysis,
design and construction. Here are some highlights of the past
year's research project activities.
Current funded projects updates:
* Development of Design Guidelines for Pile Foundations
Subjected to Liquefaction-induced Lateral Spreading is
completed. Deliverables include the following:
- A 2020 DFI Journal paper
- A technical report to DFI
- ASCE Ports 2019 Conference content in Pittsburgh
- A presentation at SuperPile '19 in Seattle
- A presentation at the 2019 DFI Annual Conference in
Chicago
- Two papers submitted to ASCE J. Geotech. & Geoenvr. Eng.
- One paper submitted to Soil Dynamics & Earthquake Eng.
* Design Guidelines for Characterizing the Residual
Strength of P-Y Curves for Rock Socketed Shafts has been
granted a no-cost extension to September 2022.
Deliverables to date include:
- A DFI Journal paper
- An abstract submitted to the 47th DFI Annual Conference
- An abstract submitted to SuperPile '22
* Design of Drilled Shafts Subjected to Combined Effects of
Lateral Spreading and Superstructure Inertia is ongoing.
* Seismic Performance of Rigid Inclusions - Phase I has
been completed. Armin Stuedlein, Ph.D., PE., and Matthew
Gibson, Ph.D., P.E., gave a keynote presentation on this
topic at the 46th DFI Annual Conference, and a DFI Journal
paper is planned. Phase II, which will synthesize the
results of Phase I and present a proposed simplified design
procedure resulting from the research, has been approved.
Awarded projects for 2022: The DFI Board of Trustees awarded
$30,000 in funding to each of the following three proposals:
* Developing Design Guidel ines for Est imat ing
Liquefaction-Induced Soil Displacement Demands on
Pile-Supported Wharves, PI: Arash Khosravifar, Ph.D.,
Portland State University
* Reinforcing Mechanisms of Soil-Cement Columns in
Liquefiable Sand Underneath an Embankment During
Strong Earthquake Loading, PI: Mohammad Khosravi,
Ph.D., Montana State University
* Seismic Performance of Rigid Inclusions - Phase II, PI:
Armin Stuedlein, Ph.D., PE., Oregon State University
Congratulations to our award winners! Other Committee
initiatives include:
* Updating the Seismic and Lateral Load Design Guide (Lead:
Ben Turner, Ph.D., P.E., Dan Brown and Associates, and
George Anoyatis, Ph.D., KU Leuven, Belgium).
* What's Shaking: Anne Lemnitzer, Ph.D., P.E., is developing
the concept of an in-person or remote workshop series,
whereby researchers in the seismic engineering field
could present their latest findings and publications. The
workshops would be geographically related, with a West
Coast, East Coast, and/or New Madrid seismic zone
(Midwest) series, for example. The idea, though formative,
should be a great way to disseminate cutting-edge
research results. Keep your ear to the ground.
* Lateral Thinking: A 10- to 15-minute presentation to the
committee on some topic of relevant interest. This could
be an intermediate project update, interesting case
history, question to the group, etc. Presentations have
included: " Utilizing Strain Gages to Estimate Deflection
During Lateral Load Testing " by Jon Sinnreich, P.E., Load
Test Consulting, which is now a paper that will be
presented at the ASTM StressWave 2022 conference in
Rotterdam, Netherlands, in September; and " Remediation
of Liquefaction Effects for Embankment Using Isolated
Stiffened Soil-Cement Columns " by Mohammad
Khosravi, Ph.D. We are keen for more examples.
Last but not least, our very own Khosravifar was profiled in
the May/June 2021 edition of Deep Foundations magazine!
