Hank is also the firm's representative
to DFI, where he has served on committees
related to his diverse technical
experience and skills. He is Schnabel's
lead " booth presence " at DFI and other
industry association conferences and
tradeshows, has been a presenter at
multiple technical conferences conducted
by DFI and other leading professional
associations, and has over
11 published papers to his credit. He
has also volunteered his time as a
technical reviewer for papers submitted
to the DFI. Hank tells us, " I think
that there are a lot of benefits that DFI
offers. The conferences are a great
place to catch up with suppliers,
engineers and competitors. I always
learn something new. "
At Schnabel, as in the industry at
large, if there is a need, he is the person
to take it on. Being a team player is a key
part of his makeup. To illustrate this,
Brock Gaspar, Schnabel senior project
manager, says, " When I joined the
Boston office in 2006, which Hank
managed, I quickly learned that the
entire office gathered in the lunchroom
and ate lunch at the same time. We
would share personal stories and
updates on current projects. It was not
mandatory, just an informal time to get
together. We even had a white board
where we could draw up projects and
share ideas. A simple act to bring us
closer. Since I joined the company right
out of college, I thought that this was
normal. Turns out, it's not! I imagine
that this ritual was started by Hank
getting people together to simply enjoy
each other's company. " So, there is a
reason that the company consistently
receives high marks from employees as
being great to work for.
Future Challenges
Hank Schnabel sees one of the main
challenges facing the industry as
getting good people. As it relates to
developing young engineers, he advises
two things. " Firstly, they should have a
sound understanding of the basics.
They need to research how earth
pressure diagrams were developed, and
have a good understanding of the
fundamentals of soil mechanics. " And
secondly, he adds, " Learn as much as
you can about the equipment and how it
is used. Much of the success of a project
is having the right equipment and
utilizing the correct drilling methods. "
Having grown up in the industry
filling multiple roles, Hank knows of
which he speaks. His desire to share
what he has learned captures the
essence of just what kind of a professional
and mentor he is.
When not taking on geotechnical
challenges, he enjoys rooting for his
favorite football team. He has also, by
the way, earned his second dan black
belt in Taekwondo, which is no small
achievement.
Hank's reputation in the industry as
an all-around-good-person and a " go
to " guy is well deserved.
