The data acquired through geotechnical instrumentation
monitoring demonstrated that the two high-risk construction
activities on the project, pile driving and embankment fill
operations, did not have any long-term impact on the existing
bridge over a 2.5-year monitoring period. As demonstrated by
the discrete events highlighted above, minor effects of
construction were seen, but did not trigger alerts set in place
for the protection of the existing bridge and its components.
Instead, it was found that weather, traffic and debris were the
primary causes of alerts generated by the instrumentation,
with seasonal and daily temperature fluctuations having a
measured effect as well.
Successful monitoring of the health and performance of a
bridge beyond its intended service life was achieved through
the careful planning and utilization of selected instruments.
Deploying each instrument for a specific purpose avoided
overcollection of data and maintained a manageable level of
daily evaluation. The use of various overlapping instrument
types in similar areas allowed FTG to continually assess
trends and limit risk to public safety.
The value of geotechnical instrumentation monitoring is
demonstrated by what does not occur, and is unique to each
type of structure, the work being performed and conditions

contractors were able to lean on an experienced team of
geotechnical engineers to manage bridge foundation integrity
while the project remained on schedule. The new bridge
successfully opened in the fall of 2022.
Kevin Tehansky, P.E.,Foundation Test Group (FTG), is a senior
geotechnical engineer at FTG and the instrumentation monitoring
project manager for the project.
Jeffrey Goodwin, P.E., is FTG's chief engineer and the geotechnical
instrumentation specialist for the project.
Melih Demirkan, Ph.D., P.E. is Rite Geosystem's chief executive
officer and the main instrument supplier for the project.
