manufacturers can match their emerging technologies and
products to specifications and standards currently in use.
The update process for UFGS and UFC documents are also

often completed utilizing both in-house capabilities and
engineering firms under contract. In addition, industry
professionals often have public forum opportunities to
review and comment on specifications during the updating
process. Recently, for example, NAVFAC partnered
with Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) technical
committee members to review 12 intermediate-level,
deep foundation-related specifications prior to
publication. Updated specifications for tunnel shafts
and grouting are also planned very soon.
Pending Manual Updates
Among the predecessors to UFGS and
UFC documents were design manuals,
including the popular NAVFAC DM 7
series that was published in 1971. Since
then this series, favored by engineering
professionals, has offered simplified
explanations of complex geotechnical
methods and concepts in the form of
easily digestible charts and tables. The series also contains
numerous correlations that have become widely used in
engineering practice. Recognizing its significance to the
engineering community, the DoD recently updated NAVFAC
DM 7.1 Soil Mechanics (now called UFC 3-220-10 Soil
Mechanics). The Tri-Service Geotechnical Design Working
Group, consisting of engineers from NAVFAC, USACE, and Air
Force Civil Engineering Command (AFCEC), led the effort to
substantially update the old design manual, which is
expected to be available through the WBDG website in fall
2021. Expert contributors were involved from academia as
well as from industry. Great care was taken to retain the same
style and usability of the original manual that has been
popular since the age of the slide rule.
In addition, an update is underway to NAVFAC DM 7.2,
