S3 Conference
in San Francisco
in August
S3: Slopes, Slides and Stabilization is
being held at the Hotel Kabuki in San
Francisco, August 3-5, 2021. The 2.5-day
conference focuses on effective
application of deep foundations, ground
improvement, and soil mixing for
stabilization of slopes and excavation
support. The event is led by DFI's Deep
Foundations for Landslides/Slope
Stabilization Committee and the DFIADSC
Anchored Earth Retention
Committee with contributions from
seven additional DFI committees that
support the subject matter.
Preconference Events
The Deep Foundations for Landslides/
Slope Stabilization Committee will
meet on Tuesday, August 3, ahead of the
conference. Following that committee's
meeting, the Women in Deep Foundations
(WiDF) Committee is hosting a
social networking event.
Software Discussion
A highlight of the conference is a
90-minute, live software discussion
and panel webinar on Thursday,
August 5, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
PT. The discussion will also be
broadcast as a webinar for those who
cannot attend the conference. Erik
Loehr, Ph.D., P.E., of the University of
Missouri-Columbia who is trustee
liaison for DFI's Deep Foundations for

background of the software discussion
problem and facilitate the discussion
a imed a t fu r t he r i ng i ndus t r y
understanding of software use for slope
stabilization problems. This year 's
problem focuses on appropriate modeling
of groundwater in slope stability
analyses. Providers of commonly used
software packages will discuss, analyze
and present solutions for a real-world
slope stabilization problem, highlighting
the influence of groundwater
variations on the solutions, and will
provide tips on using packages to
produce and validate solutions. The
presentation will be followed by a
facilitated Q&A discussion.
Technical Program
All S3 technical sessions are presented
in plenary format and in-depth
discussion is encouraged. On Wednesday,
August 4,
a n d T h u r s d a y ,
August 5, invited
speakers and other
industry experts
will provide presentations
on the
latest analytical and
design methods and
practical applications.
California
case histories will
be highlighted, with
deep mixing and
ground improvement
techniques
being an emphasis
due to their applicability
to the San
Francisco area.
This event feaBoulanger
Jameson
tures
three invited
speakers. On Wednesday,
August 4,
Ross Boulanger,
Ph.D., P.E., University of California,
Davis, will overview seismic research
efforts with a focus on current
initiatives. Boulanger's talk will be
followed by Rob Jameson, Malcolm
Drilling Company, who will review the
last decade of deep mixing practices in
San Francisco.
On August 5, Mark Rice, Esq., McNeil
Silveria Rice & Wiley, will address the
legal and forensic considerations
relative to landslides, causation, and
forensic analytics, as well as how postslide
investigations and legal resolutions
can occur, with these steps often faltering
due to inadequate initial investigations
and " crime scene " capture.
In addition, three on-demand presentations
are available to attendees.
