Dr. Arash Khosravifar Breaks New Ground
ism, technical approach to problem
solving and vision for a graduate
program have always been my compass
since I started my career at Portland
State University, where I joined the
faculty in 2015. "
Phase II
In 2003, a major earthquake in the
Iranian city of Bam sadly resulted in the
loss of 20,000 lives. Arash Khosravifar,
then a civil engineering student at
Sharif University of Technology in
Tehran, helped with the post-quake
reconnaissance efforts. He witnessed
the devastation in a very personal way
and identifies that massive tragic event
as being the major influence behind
directing his studies, and later his
prodigious research, on earthquake
engineering. Khosravifar completed a
master's degree as well in geotechnical
engineering at Sharif University before
coming to the United States for a Ph.D. at
the University of California, Davis, in its
renowned geotechnical and earthquake
engineering program.
In addition to appreciating the
opportunity to pursue his advanced
education there, he credits Ross
Boulanger, Ph.D., P.E., as being a major
influence on his career path. He notes,
" Dr. Boulanger was my academic
advisor at UC, Davis. His professionalAUTHOR

In 2012, after completing his Ph.D.,
Khosravifar joined leading international
geotechnical engineering firm Fugro
Consultants, working in Oakland,
California. He began his 4-year tenure
there as a senior staff engineer, later
becoming a project engineer involved in
technically challenging projects. He
credits this invaluable experience as
laying the groundwork for his ongoing
research focus. Thaleia Travasarou,
Ph.D., was his supervisor and mentor at
Fugro, and an important influence on
his career. He offers, " In addition to her
talent and hard work, I was most
impressed by her management style
and how she empowered staff and
project engineers by creating the most
exciting work environment. "
Khosravifar 's outstanding reputation
as an educator is evidenced by
comments from past students such as
Jonathan Nasr, who received his
master's degree at Portland State. A
project engineer with Atlas Geotechnical
in Santa Cruz, California, Nasir
says, " At Portland State I served as a
graduate TA for Dr. Khosravifar 's soil
mechanics lecture and lab. I saw the
level of effort he put into delivering his
lectures, regularly drawing praise from
his students. He really wanted his
students to succeed. " He adds, " I had
the luxury of working with Arash on a
DFI-sponsored research project. He
always challenged and supported me. I
credit him for helping me develop
habits that have served me well in my
professional career. "
Areas of Special Interest
Khosravifar took his early interest in
earthquake dynamics to an advanced
level. His copious research and writings
on the performance of deep foundations
during conditions of liquefaction are
Khosravifar's outstanding reputation as
an educator is evidenced by comments
from past students ...
Nowadays, Boulanger and Travasarou
advise Khosravifar as he helps grow
the geotechnical engineering graduate
program at Portland State, where he is
an assistant professor. While he finds
the pace in academia a bit slower than
the private sector, he notes the rewarding
aspects of learning with students as
he assists their academic journeys, and
assisting graduate students who pursue
advanced degrees.
aptly described as
" prodigious. " His
research work and
related areas of
investigation are
supported by over
40 papers in which
he is a co-author, 30 of which were
refereed. You can add to this the more
than 25 presentations he has given at
conferences, and seminars, including
being a guest lecturer at several universities,
and lectures for DFI organized
and sponsored events. Given his
multiple endeavors, one can clearly see
the depth and breadth of his work.
