DFI Adds Value Through Alliances
You've likely noticed the words " collaboration, " " cooperation, " " partnering, " " joint
efforts " and " alliances " popping up regularly in my messages. I may sound like a
broken record, but such words spring to mind in considering this issue's coastal
infrastructure theme. In particular, DFI is cooperating in three coastal infrastructurerelated
initiatives: our bi-annual joint seminar with the Metropolitan Section of
ASCE's Coasts, Oceans, Ports & Rivers Institute (COPRI), our involvement in ISFOG
(International Symposium on Frontiers in Offshore Geotechnics) and our
participation in the U.S. Levee Safety Coalition.
The first effort involves the third collaborative seminar hosted by DFI's Marine
Foundations Committee and New York-based COPRI, which this year took place
online. Our message about innovations and challenges occurring with waterfront
projects reached attendees outside the tri-state area, including other countries. This
joint effort has grown in scope annually, offering everything from case histories on
waterfront projects to ways to address rehabilitation and noise mitigation
challenges; this year addressed regulatory and policy issues with presentations from
the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as well as New York City
Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), Naval Facilities (NAVFAC) and the
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (see page 97).
The second effort is developing the fourth ISFOG with Geo-Institute of ASCE. As
long-time partners, we were asked by representatives of ISSMGE's TC 209 on
Offshore Geotechnics to co-host the event after previous ones in Norway and
Australia. This symposium emphasizes cutting-edge advancements to overcome
global issues facing offshore projects, and allows DFI members to connect with global
geotechnical professionals. Plan to attend the symposium August 28-31, 2022, in
Austin, Texas. Proceedings - including more than 200 papers - are available ahead of
the event via www.dfi.org/ISFOG.

formed its Seepage Control Working Group in 2014. This group focused on industry
best practices for seepage cutoff and foundation improvement for water
infrastructure projects, and has become a DFI technical committee that actively
participates in the Levee Safety Coalition to assist in preserving and protecting public
safety, life and property. Along with ASCE, the Association of State Dam Safety
Officials (ASDSO), the National Association of Flood & Stormwater Management
Agencies (NAFSMA), the United States Society on Dams (USSD) and the American
Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), we meet monthly to advocate for the
National Levee Safety Initiative and keep members apprised of future opportunities
within this industry segment. You can learn about this cooperative effort on page 91.
Each time DFI works with others to find common ground, we make this industry
and our institute stronger. That is something we always strive for as part of providing
value to DFI members.
