The latest issue of the DFI Journal is all
about deep foundations - auger castin-place
piles, drilled shafts, micropiles
and press-in-place piles.
The first research paper " Application
of the Concrete Stressmeter for Augered
Cast-in-Place Deep Foundation Testing, "
by Jon Sinnreich and William Ryan
describes the application of the concrete
stressmeter for compression testing of
augered cast-in-place piles.
The next paper, " Side Resistance of
Drilled Shafts in Weak Fine Grained
Sedimentary Rock, " by Timothy D.
Stark, Ahmed H. Baghdady, Abdolreza
Osouli, Heather Shoup and Michael A.
Short examines current side resistance
predictive models using a database of
solely weak fine-grained rocks in
Illinois - shales, mudstones and siltstones
- with unconfined compressive
strengths ranging from 0.48 to 4.8 MPa.
As a companion to the preceding
paper, Stark, Baghdady, Osouli, Shoup
and Short describe a new procedure
termed the Modified SPT (or MSPT) in
" Modified Standard Penetration Test for
Drilled Shaft Design in Weak FineGrained
Rocks. " The writers provide
clear guidelines for the conditions
where the MSPT are most applicable.
In " Fibre-Reinforced Grout for Micropile
Construction, " Maged Abdlrahem
and M. Hesham El Naggar investigate
the use of fibre-reinforced grout to
improve the flexural strength of hollow
bar micropiles. This study investigates
the use of four types of fibers in grout
mixture with different dosages to
enhance the strength of grout used for
micropile construction.
The issue closes with " Increase of
CPT-Determined Density of Sand Due to
Installation of Press-in Piles, " by Bengt
H. Fellenius and Siew Ann Tan. In this
research paper, the authors discuss the
installation effects of press-in piles on
the density of the surrounding granular
soils by comparing pre- and post-CPTU
soundings performed adjacent to the
closed-toe spun piles.
