DIRECTOR OF TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES
TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES
T h a n k y o u .
S imp l e words
that I do not use
o f t en enough,
particularly with work. Sure, I use
them when people do something for
me or give me something; you will
often see some form of them in the
closing of my emails. That's just good
manners, right? I am referring to the
unrequested instances.
A number of my notes so far in this
magazine have been asking you to be
more involved. On the cusp of Midyear
Committee Week and a little over a
month after our Winter Planning
Meeting, I would like to thank you for
being involved, and in particular express
my appreciation for our wonderful
committee chairs, Board of Trustees,
Educational Trust Board members and
our largest group of volunteers -
technical and event commi t tee
members. Your dedication to our
industry is amazing. Thank you for your
time, passion and knowledge.
It is because of you all that I have the
position I do and the ability to work side
by side with you to move our industry
forward. That may mean some stressful
weeks around our Winter Planning
Meeting and Midyear Committee Week
as we gather updates, wrap up initiatives
and embark on new activities. However,
the palpable and contagious energy from
you as we do those things is more than
enough to carry me through and keep me
excited. That same energy is the spark
that turns the visitors attending
meetings during Midyear Committee
Week into DFI members and future
contributors to our mission.
It is largely in recognition of your
efforts that the DFI Board of Trustees
chose to exceed our Committee Project
Fund budget with awards to three
proposals submitted this year. Here are
the awarded projects, lead committees
and project managers for the 2023
Committee Project Fund program.
* Rigid Inclusions for Improved
Seismic Design submitted by the
Augured Cast-In-Place and Drilled
Displacement Pile Committee,
being led by Hannah Iezzoni, P.E.,
and Jonathon Hubler, Ph.D., both
with Villanova University
* Analyzing the Difference Between a
Single Row of Piles vs. Staggered
Rows for Slope Stabilization by the
Landslides/Slope Stabilization Committee,
being led by Anthony Metz,
P.E., and Roberto Navarez Garibaldi,
P.E., both with GEI Consultants
* Towards Improved Service Life
Predictions of Previously Installed
Steel Piles by the Subsurface
Characterization for Deep Foundations
Committee, being led by Martin
Noël, Ph.D., P.Eng., Sai Vanapalli,
Ph.D., and Beatriz Martin-Perez,
Ph.D., all with University of Ottawa
As a result of discussions that took place
during our Winter Planning Meeting, we
will have some new opportunities for
you to share your passion and contribute
to our industry. Watch for updates in the
coming months. I expect there will also
be opportunities that come up during
Midyear Committee Week and I hope
you tap into the energy to step up to help
with those, too.
Thank you, to all of you reading this,
for your contributions to DFI and our
industry.

DFI's International Grouting Committee
welcomed the New Year with our
14th committee meeting at the DFIInternational
Conference Organization for
Grouting (ICOG) 6th International Conference
on Grouting and Deep Mixing
held in New Orleans on January 17.
The committee's first initiative was
to develop a " Summary of Main
Standards and Guidelines on Grouting
Available in North America and
Europe. " The first edition was issued in
2021 and was the product of an
internationally concerted effort. The
document provides standard practice
requirements and guidance for
qualifications, materials, equipment,
testing and production procedures that
are utilized across the grouting
industry. The publication is a valuable
resource and is a living document
intended to be revised as updates and
additions become available. All
interested professionals are encouraged
to review the document posted at
www.dfi .org/publ icat ions/newpublications/
and provide the International
Grouting Committee with
updated revisions or additional listings.
The committee has established two
subcommittees with a goal to address
current needs within the grouting
community after canvassing our membership.
The new Rock Grouting/Soil
Grouting subcommittee, co-chaired by
Ron Hall, Nicholson Construction
Company and David Miller, P.E., Forgen,
focuses on quality assurance/control
