methods and standards to address the
issue of problematic specifications.
The new Grouting Materials and
Methods subcommittee, chaired by
Billy Fisher, Russo Corporation, is
focusing on exploring grout durability,
case studies on non-cementitious
grouts and guidance on blended
cements with an emphasis on Type IL
(ASTM C595/AASHTO M240) cement.
During the committee meeting,
there was extensive discussion concerning
the increasing use of Type IL
(ASTM C595/AASHTO M240) grout
across the U.S., and that the use of
blended cements has been utilized in
France and the U.K. for some time. On a
worldwide scale, the availability of the
customarily utilized Type I/II cement
for grouting projects is becoming
scarce. The committee concluded that
there is an industry-wide need for
establishing guidance as the shift to
Type IL becomes standard.
We would like to extend our
congratulations to Committee Co-Chair
Raffaella Granata, Trevi, named as one of
the GREATS at the DFI-ICOG 6th
International Conference on Grouting
and Deep Mixing. As a member of the
International Grouting Committee,
James Myers, B.Eng., Keller, has volunteered
to serve on the 2023 DFI Trust
Scholarship Committee. We are also in
discussion with Paolo Gazzarrini, P.Eng.,
Sea to Sky Geotech, concerning the role
that our committee will play in keeping
The Grout Line as a viable source of
communication within the grouting
community. Subscribe to The Grout Line

As a somewhat newer committee,
we are continuing to assess the best
path forward and how we can bring the
most benefit to the grouting community.
We encourage and welcome
new members with an interest in
helping us to develop an effective and
successful International Grouting
Committee.
COMMITTEE CHAIR ALEXANDER FILOTTI, P.E.
Risks and Contracts
This being the first
activity report of
the Risk and Contracts
Committee, I
will use the occasion
to introduce
the history, people
and achievements of this committee to
our DFI community. The establishment
of the committee in 2019 was spearheaded
mainly by the efforts of previous
DFI Director of Technical Activities Mary
Ellen Large, P.E., D.GE, Nicholson
Construction Company, Richard D.
Kalson, Esq., Benesch Friedlander
Coplan & Aronoff, and Alex Filotti, P.E.,
Citnalta Construction. Kalson has been
the de facto co-chair of this committee
from its start, and he also chairs the GeoIndustry
Risk Working Group.
The committee elected Bryn Harris,
Bauer Foundation Corporation, as vice
chair at its October 2022 meeting as part
of DFI's 47th Annual Conference on
Deep Foundations.
The Risk and Contracts Committee
was instituted to educate and create
awareness regarding the contractual,
design and operational risks regularly
faced by DFI members in an increasingly
complex and changing
commercial environment. The initial
key objectives were very challenging:
* Establish the fundamental requirements
for the geotechnical risk
management for all entities involved
along a geotechnical project's life
cycle.
* Cooperate with all DFI technical
committees in establishing risk
management standards and providing
suggested guidance for all
types of geotechnical products and
techniques.
* Harmonize the risk management
knowledge of DFI with the knowledge
of other deep foundation
organizations.
64 * DEEP FOUNDATIONS * MAY/JUNE 2023
In its inaugural year, the committee
started to work on a Book of Risk for DFI
members. The results of the risks
identification section were discussed at
DFI's Annual Conference in 2019. This
discussion exposed the diversity of
external and internal context of the
member organizations and the difficulty
of creating a standard document
for the management of risk in the
geotechnical industry.
Therefore, the committee has
moved to concentrating on the initial
task of educat ing and creat ing
awareness regarding the contractual,
design and operational risks of our
industry. At the last committee
meeting, under the enthusiastic drive
of Shawna Munn, P.Eng., Isherwood
Associates, a decision was made to
publish a " Risk Corner " in DFI's
magazine, Deep Foundations, to discuss
risk management issues encountered
by committee members.
The committee's most recent
meeting featured a well-received
presentation on the risks for DFI
members in regards to the constant
expansion of the design-build project
delivery system. Derrick Dasenbrock,
P.E., D.GE, F.ASCE, Federal Highway
Administration Resource Center, and
Conrad Felice Ph.D., P.E., P.Eng., D.GE,
F.ASCE, C.W. Felice, proposed the
committee organize a panel discussion
on risk and project delivery systems at
the Geo-Risk 2023 conference. The
session is titled " Project Delivery Risk
in Deep Foundations - Legal and
Operational Approaches " and will be
held on Monday, July 24, from 11:00
a.m. to 12:45 p.m. ET. Information is
available at www.geo-risk.org.
