GRL Engineers, the deep foundation
consulting and testing firm based in
Cleveland, Ohio, has opened its twelfth
location on Oahu, Hawaii. The company
offers a variety of testing and analysis
methods for diverse geotechnical
conditions and challenging foundation
installations, with its new office
providing testing for projects in Hawaii
and other Pacific Islands. The office is
managed by Camilo Alvarez, P.E., a vice
president. He has performed deep
foundation testing for over 21 years on
projects throughout the U.S. and in 27
other countries. He also manages GRLCalifornia
and GRL-Colorado, is a
registered professional engineer in eight
mainland states, and holds an expertlevel
rating on the PDCA/PDI Dynamic
Measurement and Analysis Proficiency
Test. Bill Chambers, P.E., is the senior
engineer at the GRLHawaii
(GRL-HI) office.
He has 31 years of experience
in the industry,

APPLE I system, also based on Oahu, can
be used for dynamic load tests on deep
foundations of appropriate size and
capacity. The office also provides quality
assurance integrity testing services,
thermal integrity profiling, crosshole
sonic logging, and other services.
Additionally, for drilled shafts, GRL-HI
offers assessments of shaft verticality
and profile.
Jeffrey Machine recently promoted
Gabby Sager to business manager. She
will oversee all aspects
of the business, including
operations, strategic
planning, organization
of employee events and
trade show expos, social
media and supervising
employees. Sager will also be involved
in marketing and sales support, and has
been with the company for 2 years,
previously serving as marketing
manager.
In July, Sebastian Lobo-Guerrero
Ph.D., P.E., from AGES, represented DFI
in four different events for academic
and professional organizations in
Colombia, Peru and Spain. He covered
design and construction topics of drilled
shafts, micropiles
and ground anchors.

Palma in Peru, and
the Soc i edad de
McMillen Jacobs Associates has
opened a new office to better serve
clients in the Western Pennsylvania
area. The new Pittsburgh office expands
the firm's growing area presence,
adding to regional locat ions in
Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Chicago,
Illinois; and Nashville, Tennessee.
McMillen Jacobs has historically
provided tunnel and underground
engineering services in this area and
recently completed preliminary
engineering services on the Allegheny
County Sanitary Authority's Wet
Weather Plan Project in Pittsburgh.
Other notable projects in its central
region include the Lower Olentangy
Tunnel Project for the City of Columbus,
and the Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel
for the City of Akron.

Slope stability is critical for maintaining
safe and sustainable infrastructure.
GeoStabilization International has
developed its new Remote Operated
Launcher System to increase crew
capabilities and productivity. The
system does so by providing flexible and
customizable carrier configurations for
the launched soil nail stabilization
method that are adaptable to virtually
any slope angle and slope length.
The system uses the same air
cannon technology as the Soil Nail
Launcher in use for more than two
decades. By decoupl ing the ai r
compressor from the excavator, the
system can now be attached to smaller,
more maneuverable equipment. Doing
so reduces the equipment footprint and
impact on traffic flow, while providing
crews more mobility to traverse steep
slopes and safely access difficult-toreach
areas, often without the need for
temporary benching.
