papers presented over the three-day
conference along with an educational
short course " Support of Excavation,
Design and Performance. Approach to
Efficient and Safe Design. "
The committee met during the NAT
Conference to discuss challenges faced
by the committee, and to begin
planning a technical session of four to
five papers for the 2023 DFI Annual
Conference. The group also began to
strategize on reaching out to industry
experts to find the next champion of the
DFI Shotcrete Short Course. Lastly, we
discussed ways to attract students and
younger engineers to the committee.

Driven Pile Committee is moving
forward with plans to showcase
!mpact! in 2023. This live and recorded
web series is fully energized with
offerings in the pile driving industry.
We are chatting with industry greats on
their past work, newest studies and
great ideas surrounding the piling
industry. The topics will aim to cover
everything a contractor or engineer
may not know or may simply need
support from colleges to understand.
This new series will launch in January.
So, watch your email for information on
how to register or visit our webpage.

Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled Displacement Pile
DFI's Augered Cast-in-Place and Drilled
Displacement Pile Committee is
currently involved in several exciting
research projects, white papers and
journal articles.
As drilling technologies continue to
advance, larger and larger augered castin-place
(ACIP) and drilled displacement
(DD) piles are becoming more common.
With massive load-carrying capacities,
74 * DEEP FOUNDATIONS * SEPT/OCT 2022
single ACIP and DD piles are routinely
used under column supports for
structures. A commonly perceived
roadblock in the design of the single
ACIP or DD pile support is language in
the International Building Code (IBC)
that limits the L/D ratio as it relates to
the stability of the element. The code
requirements are sometimes interpreted
differently by different engineers.
The committee has
completed a position
paper on the
topic last year, including
historical
code review, finite
element modeling
and conclusions that supported the use
of piles with higher L/D ratios. The Deep

Committee webpage to add your
vibratory hammer project details.
We have just begun a new training
campaign, " Friends of Safer Foundations. "
Our starting source of ideas was
co l l ec t ed and out l ined for the
committee by Van E. Komurka, P.E.,
D.GE, of GRL Engineers. We are looking
to create a community focused training
program that contractors can use to
help the community understand what
is happening when they hear or feel
driven pile crews working. The hope for
this training and awareness campaign
is to bridge gaps between contractors
and the community with a focus on
structural longevity, integrity and
overall safety.
In January the Driven Pile and
Marine Foundations Committees
merged. It is our honor to carry on the
responsibility of supporting the
distinguished Ben C. Gerwick Award for
Innovation in the Design and Construction
of Marine Foundations. I encourage
everyone to review articles on Gerwick's
achievements and advocacy in driven
piles. We are honored not only to support
and assist in growing this prestigious
award and driven pile awareness, but
also to live up to the standards he set as a
brilliant communicator.
Please get involved and join in with
the more than 40 members of the
Driven Pile Committee. This is the best
place to be heard and to be enabled to
assist in teaching the global audience
that a driven pile is a proven solution in
the deep foundation industry. Make an
!mpact!
Committee goals include obtaining
more representation from the tunneling
community to join DFI, generating
representation of the Tunneling and
Underground Committee at the DFI
Annual Conference in Seattle in 2023
and finalizing a draft white paper on the
construction of noncircular shafts.
