The audience also took interest in
one particular question: " Who decides
how safe construction is? " When posed
wi th the quest ion and possible
decision-makers - such as owners,
designers, contractors, code writers and
others - there was at least some
surprise that the answer was " the
courts. "
Later in the session, topics turned to
the key factors that affect cost, the
ability to optimize and risk sharing. Key
points included:
* More quality information is better
for establishing geotechnical baseline
information for use in bidding.
* The structural loading is needed to
help assess geotechnical risk. What
are the actual structural loads?
What is the stress distribution?
* How are allowable bearing pressures
determined? Is there excess
conservatism?
* Can performance specifications
with measurable requirements
replace prescriptive method-based
specifications?

Foundation Reuse

Deep Foundations Committee's Foundation
Reuse Taskforce organized a
session on the " Risks and Rewards of
Foundation Reuse. " DFI's Foundation
Reuse Task Force works to promote
reuse by leveraging experience among
DFI members and collaborating with
related organizations. The task force is
active in preparing workshops and

The conference, hosted by DFI Europe and the
Geotechnical Section of the KIVI Engineering
Society, includes four sessions that will focus on
the overall concept of foundation decarbonization
and reuse, the assessment of existing foundations,
the design aspects associated with this topic, and
the impact this approach will have on the
construction phase.
A special focus will be given to contractual and
