There's still time to make plans to attend DFI's 48th Annual
Conference on Deep Foundations taking place in Seattle, from
October 31-November 3.
into the trends in industry advancements, changing policies
and standards, and incorporating resiliency in design and
construction across the deep foundation industry.
One " change " to note is a slightly new format this year. The
conference is at the Seattle Convention Center and committee
meetings and hotel rooms are at the Sheraton Grand Seattle,
half a block away.
The organizing committee, led by Conference Chair
Matthew Marks of Forgen, and Program Co-Chairs Scott
Walker, P.E., G.E., of Langan Engineering and Environmental
Services, and Kathryn Petek, Ph.D., P.E., of Shannon and Wilson,
have planned a terrific program. Here are the DFI48 highlights:
* Christopher Thornberg, Ph.D., of Beacon Economics, a.k.a.
" Dr. Doom, " shares his insight as a special keynote speaker.
* Invited speaker Monique Anderson of Shannon & Wilson
discusses major transformations of Seattle's waterfront
and the challenges of navigating the city's interesting
geology and subsurface conditions.
* Student Paper Competition Winner Lin Huang, Ph.D.
student at University of California, Davis, delivers his
presentation " Centrifuge Modeling of the Monotonic
Capacity of Offshore Ring Anchors in Sand " (see page 43).
* Outstanding Project Award Winner Thornton Tomasetti
delivers a presentation on the Climate Pledge Arena
Project, a $930-million expansion of Seattle's NHL
stadium (see the cover story on page 14).
* New this year, the Agency and Owner Panel Discussion
focuses on evolving code changes, application of emerging
technologies, risk distribution and alternate procurement
methods.
* The Manufacturers, Suppliers and Service
Providers Committee's expo sessions take
place in the exhibit hall throughout the conference.
* The Student Activities Program includes site visits to learn
about major foundation work in Seattle, a speed networking
session, and a free half-day on Friday for students.
* The 2023 recipients of the DFI Legends Award are being
honored at the Legends Awards Banquet on Thursday
evening (see page 41).
* More than 150 companies are exhibiting new and
innovative products and services.
* The 7th annual Women in Deep Foundations (WiDF)
Committee Networking Reception on Tuesday, October 31,
from 6:30 p.m. − 8:00 p.m. at the Sheraton.
* The annual DFI Educational Trust 5K Fun Run/Walk is
taking place early on the morning of Wednesday,
November 1.
