Structural Slurry Wall and Seepage Control
The committee has been updating
The committee has grown quite a bit
this year and currently has about 50
members meeting every other month.
At these meetings, members provide
updates and coordinate on established
activities, and discuss new initiatives to
promote the committee's work and
collaborate with other committees and
organizations. Periodically, the meetings
also include presentations from
guest speakers. Recently Noah Vroman
and Brad Arcement, P.E., of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) gave
a presentation titled " Current Challenges
and Successes of the Modernizing
Levee Design Practices. "
" Industry Practice Standards and DFI
Practice Guidelines for Structural
Slurry Walls. " The working group for
the guideline is composed of industry
experts and expects to produce a draft
by the end of this year.
Recently, the committee participated
in and helped lead DFI's S3:
Slopes, Support and Stabilization
Conference in Boston. Next up for an
event, the committee is working with
the USACE to host a third industry
workshop on seepage control in the late
fall this year. Keep an eye out for the
results of this workshop.

The chairs acknowledge the significant
contributions from other committee
leaders: Mary Ellen Large, P.E., D.GE,
Nicholson Construction Company;
Amshu Chappa, P.E., Brierly Associates;
Mark Petersen, P.E., G.E., Black & Veatch;
Jewels Stover, Bauer Equipment America;
and Stefano Valagussa, Treviicos.

DFI-ADSC Joint Micropile
The Joint DFI-ADSC Micropile Committee continues to push
forward its agenda in the various meetings we have
scheduled throughout the year with both organizations.
Additionally, the committee has also implemented monthly
virtual meetings held on the second Thursday of the month
when an in-person meeting is not held that month. These
virtual meetings are one hour in length and serve as an
excellent way for younger professionals that are not always
able to attend the in-person meetings and events to become
involved. They are a much less formal occasion where the
first 30 minutes are spent quickly covering committee
activities that have significant updates. The remaining 30
minutes are reserved for a presentation on a topic of interest.
These presentations are often given by members that have
presented the same topic at a recent in-person event. All are
welcome!
Some of our open agenda items include:
* Development of a Micropile Installation Guide. The intent of
this guide is to provide inspectors that do not have
extensive micropile experience with guidance on the
critical items to look for. Chapters include 1) Definitions
and Construction Materials, 2) Installation Methods, 3)
Materials QA/QC, and 4) Load Testing. We hope to have a
draft document completed by the end of 2023.
* Jointly developing, with the Anchored
Earth Retention Committee, a manual
entitled Hollow Bar State of the Practice.
This manual will serve as a go-to
guide to inform engineers and contractors
of how hollow bars are
currently being used throughout the
U.S. and beyond. It is essentially an
update to the Federal Highway Administration's
publication entitled
Hollow Core Soil Nails State of the Practice,
published in April 2006, and will be
organized similarly. It will not only
include guidance for soil nail applications but will also
include the state of the practice when using hollow bars
for micropiles and prestressed ground anchors.

* Working with the Anchored Earth Retention Committee to
also do research and comparisons between Type 1L (ASTM
C595) and Type I/II cement and water grouts. In many
regions in the U.S., Type I/II cement is no longer available,
and Type 1L is the only option. Type 1L cement contains up
to 15% limestone and offers a more sustainable product for
the industry to reduce the construction carbon footprint.
While this material has been thoroughly tested and
marketed by the Portland Cement Association in concrete
